IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for 22 States, Warns of Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across 22 states over the next 24 hours. The department has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h, urging residents to remain alert and follow official safety advisories.

According to the IMD, the active monsoon system is expected to bring widespread rainfall to several parts of north, central, eastern, western, and northeastern India. States likely to witness intense rainfall include Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

The weather department has warned that isolated places may experience extremely heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas, localized flooding, reduced visibility, and traffic disruptions. Hilly regions remain vulnerable to landslides and mudslides due to continuous rainfall.

Strong thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40–60 km/h are also expected in several districts. The IMD has advised people to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, stay indoors whenever possible, and postpone unnecessary travel during periods of intense weather.

State disaster management authorities and local administrations have been placed on alert. Emergency response teams have been instructed to remain prepared for any weather-related incidents, while district officials are monitoring river levels and flood-prone areas. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into rough sea conditions along vulnerable coastal stretches.

The ongoing monsoon activity is expected to benefit agriculture by improving soil moisture and supporting the sowing of Kharif crops. However, excessive rainfall in some regions could also affect standing crops and disrupt transportation and daily life.

The IMD has urged citizens to regularly monitor official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities. Residents living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions until weather conditions improve.
