India has rescued 108 Indian nationals from flood-hit Nepal so far, while a fourth relief flight carrying 11 tonnes of humanitarian assistance landed in Kathmandu on Sunday, August 30, as New Delhi stepped up support for rescue and relief operations following the devastating Himalayan floods.
The Ministry of External Affairs said contact has also been re-established with around 50 Indian nationals who were earlier unreachable following the disaster.
According to the latest MEA update, around 275 Indian nationals are still reported missing. Another approximately 128 people of Indian origin holding foreign nationalities also remain unaccounted for.
The government said 598 Indian nationals crossed into Nepal from China during the previous two days, as authorities continued assisting people affected by disrupted transport and communication links across the Nepal-China border region.
Around 900 Indian nationals who are yet to leave China are safe, with the Indian Embassy in Beijing remaining in contact with them directly or through local authorities.
Meanwhile, India further expanded its humanitarian mission on Sunday as the fourth relief flight carrying 11 tonnes of assistance arrived in Kathmandu.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the aircraft carried essential supplies as well as technical capabilities required to support Nepal’s ongoing rescue and relief efforts. The material was handed over to the Nepal government after the flight landed.
Before Sunday’s consignment, India had already delivered more than 57 tonnes of emergency relief supplies through three flights. The latest shipment takes India’s overall air-delivered assistance to more than 68 tonnes.
India has also offered National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) assistance to support Nepal’s search-and-rescue operations and has deployed specialised medical and tunnel-rescue personnel for technically difficult missions.
The humanitarian effort comes as Nepal continues large-scale rescue operations following catastrophic flash floods that devastated communities, roads, bridges and other infrastructure across several areas.
With Indian nationals still missing and rescue operations continuing in difficult terrain, Indian diplomatic missions and Nepalese authorities remain engaged in locating stranded people and facilitating their safe evacuation.
India has said it will continue supporting Nepal with humanitarian supplies, technical expertise and rescue assistance as recovery operations progress.
