IMD Issues Fresh Heavy Rain Alert for Several States, Warns of Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several states over the next 24 to 48 hours. The department has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–70 km/h, urging residents to remain alert and follow official safety guidelines.

According to the IMD, an active southwest monsoon system, supported by a low-pressure area and favorable atmospheric conditions, is expected to bring widespread rainfall across parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

The weather department has warned that isolated places may experience very heavy rainfall, which could result in waterlogging in urban areas, flash floods in low-lying regions, and landslides in hilly districts. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to stay updated through official weather bulletins.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds of 50–70 km/h are expected to affect several districts, particularly in northern, eastern, and central India. Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles, and secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

State disaster management authorities have been placed on high alert. District administrations have activated emergency response teams, while local bodies are monitoring river levels, reservoirs, and flood-prone locations. Rescue personnel and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units have also been kept on standby in vulnerable regions to respond to any weather-related emergencies.

The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into rough sea conditions along parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal until weather conditions improve. Coastal communities have also been asked to follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Agricultural experts noted that the active monsoon is expected to improve soil moisture and support Kharif crop cultivation in many regions. However, excessive rainfall could damage standing crops, delay harvesting activities, and disrupt transportation of agricultural produce in flood-affected districts.

Health authorities have simultaneously urged people to take precautions against water-borne and vector-borne diseases, as prolonged rainfall and waterlogging can increase the risk of infections such as diarrhoea, cholera, dengue, and malaria.

The IMD has urged citizens to regularly monitor official weather forecasts and heed advisories issued by state governments and disaster management agencies. People living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas have been advised to remain vigilant until the weather system weakens.
