India Records One of the Driest Junes in Over a Century as IMD Closely Tracks Monsoon Progress

New Delhi, July 1: India has recorded one of its driest Junes in more than a century, according to preliminary data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as the southwest monsoon witnessed uneven progress across several parts of the country. While some regions experienced heavy rainfall, many states reported significant rainfall deficits, making June 2026 one of the least rainy months since systematic weather records began.

The IMD said it is closely monitoring the evolving monsoon pattern and assessing rainfall trends as the country enters the crucial July phase of the rainy season.

Rainfall Deficit Across Several Regions

Meteorological observations indicate that large parts of northwest, central, and peninsular India received below-normal rainfall during June. Delayed monsoon advancement, weak weather systems, and uneven distribution of rainfall contributed to the overall deficit.

However, parts of the northeastern states and isolated regions along the western coast recorded above-normal rainfall during the same period.

IMD Monitoring Monsoon Activity

The IMD has stated that the southwest monsoon continues to advance and that weather conditions remain favourable for increased rainfall in several states over the coming weeks.

The department is issuing regular forecasts and advisories to help state governments, disaster management authorities, farmers, and the public prepare for changing weather conditions.

Agriculture Sector Closely Watching Rainfall

The uneven distribution of rainfall has drawn attention from the agriculture sector, as timely monsoon showers are critical for sowing kharif crops such as paddy, maize, cotton, soybean, and pulses.

Agricultural experts said improved rainfall during July would be essential to maintain crop growth and ensure adequate soil moisture in rain-fed farming areas.

Authorities Remain Vigilant

State governments and disaster management agencies are closely monitoring the weather situation while preparing for both rainfall deficits and the possibility of heavy downpours in regions where the monsoon becomes more active.

The IMD has advised citizens to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow local advisories issued by district administrations.

Outlook for July

Meteorologists expect monsoon activity to strengthen during July, with several parts of the country likely to receive widespread rainfall.

The IMD will continue monitoring atmospheric conditions and issue updated forecasts to support agriculture, water resource management, disaster preparedness, and public safety.
