Student Agitation Enters a New Phase
The ongoing student agitation in Jharkhand intensified on Sunday after protesting job aspirants announced a fresh round of demonstrations over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
The latest development came after students held a Tiranga Yatra in Ranchi on Independence Day, with thousands of job aspirants and supporters participating in the march from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk. The agitation has now entered its 23rd day.
Protests Planned Across 24 Districts
Student leaders have announced that demonstrations will be expanded across Jharkhand on August 16.
According to reports published on August 16, protesters plan to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at district headquarters across the state. The announcement represents a sharper political escalation after weeks of protests over the recruitment examination system.
The protesters have also announced plans to gherao Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence on August 20, demanding action on their complaints and raising the issue of accountability within the state’s recruitment system.
What Are the Students Demanding?
The JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch has demanded the cancellation of certain recruitment examinations, including the JSSC CGL and JPSC examinations from the 11th to 13th cycles, along with an independent investigation into alleged irregularities.
Students have called for either a CBI probe or an inquiry by a panel of retired judges from outside Jharkhand. They have also demanded broader reforms to make recruitment examinations more transparent and reliable.
The protesters argue that the issue goes beyond individual examinations and concerns the credibility of the state’s recruitment system, which affects thousands of young people preparing for government jobs.
Government Promises Examination Reforms
Chief Minister Hemant Soren addressed the issue during Jharkhand’s Independence Day celebrations and said his government would work to ensure greater transparency in examinations.
Soren said the government planned changes to the examination system and launched an initiative called “Chhatron Ki Baat – Chhatron Ke Sath”, seeking suggestions from students, parents and teachers. He also said an academic calendar and measures aimed at improving examination transparency would be introduced.
The Chief Minister further said allegations of irregularities would be investigated impartially and that those found responsible would face legal action. He also cautioned against holding individuals responsible without evidence.
Devendra Mahto’s Hunger Strike Adds Pressure
The health of student leader Devendra Nath Mahto has also remained a major concern during the agitation.
Mahto, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since August 2, was admitted to Sadar Hospital in Ranchi after the August 10 protest march towards the Jharkhand Assembly. During Independence Day, he alleged that police prevented him from leaving the hospital to participate in the Tiranga Yatra.
The dispute surrounding Mahto’s participation has added another point of tension between protesters and authorities.
August 20 Protest Could Become Key Flashpoint
With protesters now planning a march towards the Chief Minister’s residence on August 20, the coming days could become an important test for both the student movement and the state government.
The government has emphasised dialogue and examination reforms, while student leaders have indicated that they will continue their agitation until they receive concrete action on their demands.
For thousands of job aspirants, the central issue remains the credibility, transparency and fairness of the recruitment examination process.
