New Delhi, November 8, 2026: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a major milestone in military aviation after its IL-76MD heavy-lift transport aircraft, popularly known as Gajraj, successfully landed at the Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 13,629 feet.
The IAF announced the achievement on November 7, describing it as the highest-altitude landing ever accomplished by an IL-76 aircraft anywhere in the world.
The milestone highlights India’s growing strategic airlift capabilities near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
IAF’s Gajraj Aircraft Creates Aviation History
The Russian-origin IL-76MD successfully touched down at the Mudh-Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh.
According to The Indian Express, the historic landing took place on Friday, November 6, and was publicly announced by the Air Force the following day.
The IAF praised the aircraft’s crew for their exceptional flying skills and professionalism.
The achievement is particularly significant because heavy transport aircraft face major operational challenges at high altitudes.
Nyoma Airbase Located Near China Border
Nyoma is situated approximately 25 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control with China, making it strategically important for India’s military preparedness.
The airbase provides the Armed Forces with an additional facility for transporting personnel, equipment and essential supplies to remote border areas.
Its location in eastern Ladakh makes it an important component of India’s high-altitude defence infrastructure.
Why Landing at 13,629 Feet Is Challenging
Operating a heavy aircraft at such an altitude requires careful planning and precision.
At higher elevations, thinner air reduces engine performance and aerodynamic lift.
Aircraft may need longer distances for takeoff and landing, while the difficult terrain and changing weather conditions create additional challenges.
The successful landing demonstrates the capability of both the aircraft and its experienced crew.
IL-76 Gajraj Can Carry Heavy Military Equipment
The IL-76MD is a four-engine heavy transport aircraft developed in the Soviet Union.
It has served the Indian Air Force for several decades and remains an important part of India’s military logistics capabilities.
Depending on operating conditions, the aircraft can carry approximately 40–45 tonnes of cargo.
It is used to transport soldiers, military equipment, vehicles and essential supplies over long distances.
The aircraft has also supported humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
Nyoma Airbase Strengthens India’s Defence Infrastructure
The Nyoma airbase underwent major infrastructure upgrades to accommodate larger military aircraft.
The project included the development of an approximately three-kilometre runway, enabling operations involving heavier transport aircraft.
The upgraded airbase became operational in November 2025.
Its development allows India to improve military logistics in areas where road transportation can be difficult, particularly during extreme weather.
Strategic Importance for Indian Armed Forces
The successful landing demonstrates that the IAF can operate a heavy transport aircraft from one of India’s most challenging high-altitude airfields.
Such capabilities can support faster movement of military personnel and equipment when operational conditions permit.
The development is significant for the Indian Army and Air Force, which maintain deployments across remote areas of Ladakh.
However, the landing does not by itself establish that the airbase can accommodate every type of heavy transport aircraft under all weather and payload conditions.
India Continues to Modernise Border Infrastructure
India has invested in roads, bridges, tunnels and military airfields across Ladakh following the border tensions with China in 2020.
Improving connectivity remains an important part of the country’s defence preparedness.
The Nyoma airbase is one of several facilities supporting military operations in the Himalayan region.
The latest achievement demonstrates the growing role of upgraded infrastructure in strengthening India’s logistical capabilities.
Indian Air Force Celebrates Record Landing
The IAF described the achievement as an important moment in aviation history.
It credited the aircraft’s successful landing to the skill, precision and professionalism of the crew.
The Air Force also said the milestone strengthens India’s strategic airlift capabilities.
The record applies specifically to the IL-76 aircraft type and should not be confused with the highest-altitude landing achieved by any aircraft.
Gajraj Landing Marks Major Defence Milestone
The historic IL-76MD landing at Nyoma demonstrates India’s progress in developing military aviation capabilities in demanding high-altitude environments.
With the airbase located close to the China border, the achievement has significant logistical and strategic importance.
The November 2026 landing reinforces the Indian Air Force’s ability to support operations in remote Himalayan regions and highlights the importance of continued investment in defence infrastructure.
