New Delhi, November 8, 2026: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has described the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 as a mistake, saying that controlling Sanjay Gandhi’s influence could have prevented much of the damage caused during the controversial period.
Speaking in interviews ahead of the release of her memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, Sonia Gandhi said she believes former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi eventually regretted imposing the Emergency.
Her remarks have renewed attention on one of the most controversial chapters in India’s political history.
Sonia Gandhi Calls 1975 Emergency a Mistake
In an interview with The Guardian, published on November 7, Sonia Gandhi reflected on the nearly two-year Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi.
She said she believes her mother-in-law was uncomfortable with the restrictions imposed during that period.
Sonia also suggested that Indira Gandhi eventually recognised the consequences of the decision.
Her comments come ahead of the November 10 release of her autobiography, which discusses her personal experiences within the Gandhi family and her political journey.
Sanjay Gandhi’s Influence During Emergency
One of the most significant revelations concerns the role of Sanjay Gandhi, Indira Gandhi’s younger son.
In her memoir, Sonia suggests that limiting Sanjay’s influence could have reduced the damage caused during the Emergency.
Although Sanjay did not hold a formal government position, he exercised considerable political influence during that period.
His involvement in controversial population-control and urban-clearance programmes became a major source of public criticism.
Rajiv Gandhi Opposed Emergency Decision
Sonia Gandhi also recalled disagreements within the Gandhi family before the Emergency was imposed.
According to her account, Rajiv Gandhi opposed the decision and advised his mother to wait for the next election.
Sanjay Gandhi, however, supported stronger action against political opponents.
The disagreement reportedly created tensions within the family, with Indira Gandhi ultimately proceeding with the Emergency.
Senior Congress Leaders Also Influenced Decision
In a separate interview with The Hindu, Sonia Gandhi clarified that Sanjay was not the only person who influenced Indira Gandhi.
She said several senior Congress leaders also placed considerable pressure on the then prime minister.
According to Sonia, only a few people close to Indira, including Rajiv Gandhi, expressed a different view.
Her remarks suggest that the decision emerged from a combination of political pressures and competing advice.
What Happened During the 1975 Emergency?
The Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and formally ended on March 21, 1977.
During this period, civil liberties were severely restricted, opposition leaders were arrested and press censorship was imposed.
The government also implemented controversial policies, including forced sterilisation campaigns and slum-clearance operations.
The Emergency remains a defining episode in discussions about democracy, constitutional powers and civil rights in India.
Indira Gandhi Later Expressed Regret, Sonia Says
Sonia Gandhi said she believes Indira eventually understood the seriousness of the situation.
She also pointed to Indira Gandhi’s subsequent public expressions of regret and apologies for excesses committed during the Emergency.
Sonia explained that she herself only fully understood the extent of the restrictions after the Emergency ended.
While discussing the circumstances that led to the decision, she acknowledged the curtailment of democratic rights during that period.
Sonia Gandhi’s New Memoir Reopens Historical Debate
The former Congress president’s autobiography, Belonging: A Journey of Love, is scheduled for release on November 10, 2026.
The book explores her early life in Italy, marriage to Rajiv Gandhi, experiences with the Nehru-Gandhi family and eventual entry into Indian politics.
Her reflections on the Emergency provide a personal account of disagreements within the family during a critical period in Indian history.
The remarks also come at a time when the Emergency continues to feature prominently in political exchanges between Congress and the BJP.
Emergency Remains a Major Political Controversy
The BJP has frequently criticised Congress over the Emergency, citing the suspension of civil liberties and detention of political opponents.
Congress leaders have offered varying assessments of the period, including acknowledgements of mistakes and discussions of the political circumstances surrounding the decision.
Sonia Gandhi’s latest comments add to that debate by distinguishing Indira Gandhi’s decision from the influence of Sanjay Gandhi and other senior political figures.
However, her account represents her personal recollection and interpretation of events.
Sonia Gandhi’s Remarks Draw Attention Ahead of Book Release
The interviews published on November 7 have attracted attention because of Sonia Gandhi’s direct assessment of the Emergency and her description of divisions within the Gandhi family.
Her statement that the decision was a mistake, alongside her comments on Sanjay Gandhi’s influence, offers a new perspective on the family’s internal discussions.
With her memoir scheduled for publication on November 10, further details about her experiences during India’s Emergency period are expected to emerge.
