New Delhi, November 5, 2026: The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year service extension for 75% of Agniveers who would otherwise leave the armed forces after completing their initial four-year engagement. The decision, announced on November 4, introduces a new pathway for Agniveers to continue serving in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force and potentially secure regular military employment.
The revised arrangement follows a comprehensive review of the Agnipath recruitment scheme and comes as the first batch of Agniveers approaches the end of its four-year service period.
Cabinet Approves Two-Year Extension
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N S Raja Subramani announced the decision following a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under the original Agnipath scheme, introduced on June 14, 2022, Agniveers were recruited for four years, after which up to 25% could be selected for regular military service based on merit and organisational requirements.
The remaining 75% were expected to leave the armed forces.
Under the revised policy, this group will now be offered an additional two-year engagement, extending their total service period to six years if they choose to continue.
Existing 25% Retention Policy Remains Unchanged
The government has clarified that the existing provision for regular absorption of 25% of Agniveers after four years will continue.
These personnel will be selected based on performance, merit and the requirements of the armed forces.
The remaining 75% will receive a second engagement opportunity rather than being required to leave immediately after completing four years.
Opportunity for Regular Employment After Six Years
One of the most significant changes is the additional opportunity for regular military employment.
After completing the extended two-year period, Agniveers who wish to continue will be eligible for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to meeting prescribed selection criteria.
The Ministry of Defence has said the policy creates a pathway for all Agniveers to be considered for regular military service.
However, regular absorption is not unconditional. Candidates must meet the applicable selection standards and express their willingness to continue.
More Than 18,000 Agniveers Were Due to Exit
The decision comes shortly before the first batch of Agniveers completes its four-year tenure.
According to reports, more than 18,300 Agniveers were expected to leave the armed forces by December 31, 2026, under the earlier arrangement.
The revised policy offers these personnel an opportunity to continue their military careers for another two years.
Government Cites Positive Performance Feedback
The Defence Ministry said the decision followed an assessment of the Agnipath scheme over its first four years.
According to the government, military commanders reported positive results regarding Agniveers’ physical fitness, discipline, motivation, technological skills and operational performance.
The review also highlighted improvements in recruitment transparency and the geographical reach of military recruitment.
Officials said these findings supported the decision to extend service opportunities.
Higher Pay and Improved Benefits Announced
The second engagement period will include higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.
These improvements are intended to provide better financial support to Agniveers who choose to continue serving beyond the initial four years.
The government has not specified the complete revised salary structure in its initial announcement.
Detailed implementation guidelines are expected to clarify the applicable benefits and conditions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Welcomes Decision
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the Cabinet’s approval and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He described the additional engagement period as a second opportunity for Agniveers to continue contributing to the armed forces.
The government maintains that the revised framework will help balance military manpower requirements with the career aspirations of young recruits.
Agnipath Scheme to Continue
The Defence Ministry has confirmed that the Agnipath scheme will continue with the revised engagement provisions.
The programme was introduced in 2022 to recruit young personnel into the armed forces through a short-term service model.
Since its introduction, the scheme has generated debate over job security, long-term benefits and career opportunities after military service.
The latest changes address one of the scheme’s key features by creating an additional service period and another route towards regular enrolment.
Revised Policy Marks Major Recruitment Change
The Cabinet’s decision represents an important modification to India’s military recruitment system.
Instead of limiting most Agniveers to four years, the revised framework allows willing personnel to serve up to six years before undergoing further assessment for regular employment.
The policy is expected to affect upcoming Agniveer batches and influence future military recruitment planning.
Further details on selection procedures, remuneration and implementation will become clearer as the Ministry of Defence issues additional instructions.
