Orange Alert Issued for Delhi-NCR

New Delhi, July 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Delhi-NCR, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next 24 hours. The weather department has also placed some districts under a Red Alert, warning of very heavy rainfall and the possibility of localized flooding, waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

The advisory comes as the southwest monsoon remains active across north India, bringing widespread rainfall to Delhi and neighbouring regions.

Heavy Rain Expected Across Delhi-NCR

According to the IMD, several parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

Residents have been advised to remain alert, particularly during periods of intense rain, lightning and strong winds.

Red Alert for Vulnerable Areas

While Delhi-NCR remains under an Orange Alert, the IMD has placed certain adjoining areas under a Red Alert due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall.

Authorities warned that low-lying locations may witness:

  • Waterlogging
  • Localised flooding
  • Traffic congestion
  • Reduced visibility
  • Temporary disruption of public transport

Emergency response teams have been kept on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents.

Relief from Heat, But Humidity Persists

The rainfall has brought relief from high temperatures across the National Capital Region.

However, meteorologists noted that humidity levels are expected to remain high between rain spells, leading to uncomfortable weather conditions despite the drop in daytime temperatures.

Cloudy skies are likely to persist over the next few days.

Advisory for Residents

The IMD has advised people to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Drive cautiously on slippery and waterlogged roads.
  • Follow official weather advisories and traffic updates.
  • Keep emergency contact numbers readily available.

Municipal agencies have also been instructed to monitor drainage systems and deploy teams to address waterlogging and fallen trees.

Active Monsoon Over North India

The weather department stated that the southwest monsoon continues to remain active over north and central India.

Apart from Delhi-NCR, several neighbouring states are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days as monsoon activity intensifies.

The IMD said it will continue monitoring the evolving weather situation and issue updated advisories whenever necessary.
