Infineon to Acquire India’s C2i Semiconductors, Betting on Indian Technology for AI Data-Centre Power Chips

Bengaluru/Munich: German semiconductor giant Infineon Technologies has announced the acquisition of Bengaluru-based C2i Semiconductors, strengthening its capabilities in power-management technology for increasingly energy-intensive artificial intelligence data centres.

The deal will bring C2i’s expertise in software-defined power management, multiphase controllers and smart power stages into Infineon’s global portfolio. The transaction was announced on August 24 and is expected to close in the third quarter of calendar year 2026. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

Why Infineon Is Buying C2i Semiconductors

AI data centres are consuming rapidly increasing amounts of electricity as processors such as GPUs become more powerful.

Delivering electricity efficiently from the grid all the way to high-performance chips has become one of the biggest technical challenges facing modern data-centre operators.

C2i specialises in technologies designed to regulate and deliver power more intelligently to AI processors.

Infineon said the acquisition will help accelerate development of intelligent and scalable power architectures from “grid to core”, supporting AI servers and high-performance computing platforms.

What Does C2i Semiconductors Do?

C2i Semiconductors is a Bengaluru-based fabless semiconductor startup founded in 2024 by industry veterans with experience at Texas Instruments.

The company is developing smart power-stage chips and multiphase controllers designed for advanced computing infrastructure.

Power stages are critical components inside AI servers because they regulate and convert electricity before it reaches processors such as GPUs and CPUs.

Modern AI server boards can contain dozens—or even more than a hundred—of these components, making even small improvements in power efficiency potentially significant.

C2i has argued that a 0.5% to 1% improvement in power-stage efficiency could save roughly 100 to 150 watts on a server board, while also reducing the amount of heat that needs to be removed from the system.

AI Chips Are Creating New Power Challenges

The rapid growth of generative AI has led technology companies to install enormous clusters of GPUs inside data centres.

While attention often focuses on processors from companies such as Nvidia, the power infrastructure surrounding those chips is becoming equally important.

AI processors can experience sudden changes in computational load, which can cause power demand to fluctuate extremely quickly.

Infineon says software-defined power systems can respond more precisely to these changes by combining advanced semiconductor components with intelligent digital control and software algorithms.

The goal is to reduce energy losses, maintain system stability and support increasingly high power densities.

Infineon Plans India Centre of Excellence

The acquisition will also expand Infineon’s research and development operations in India.

Infineon plans to create a new centre of excellence for digital power technologies in India, using C2i’s specialised engineering capabilities as part of its global R&D network.

Infineon currently employs approximately 2,800 people in India.

Adam White, President of Infineon’s Power Systems division, said the acquisition would strengthen the company’s position in AI data-centre power solutions while expanding its capabilities in next-generation vertical power delivery architectures.

Vertical Power Delivery Becomes Key AI Technology

C2i also brings expertise in vertical power delivery, an emerging method aimed at delivering electricity more directly to processors instead of routing power across traditional motherboard layouts.

Infineon specifically highlighted C2i’s work in technologies including Substrate Integrated Voltage Regulators (SIVR).

As AI chips require more electricity, traditional power-delivery approaches can become less efficient.

Vertical architectures can potentially shorten the distance electricity travels before reaching the processor, reducing losses and supporting more powerful computing systems.

C2i Gains Access to Infineon’s Global Scale

For C2i, joining Infineon provides access to much larger manufacturing and commercial resources.

C2i founder and CEO Ram Anant said the transaction would give the company access to Infineon’s semiconductor technologies, manufacturing capabilities and global customer relationships.

The startup had previously raised $16.7 million from Peak XV Partners and other investors as it worked toward bringing its first power-management products to market.

C2i had been preparing its first smart power-stage chip for fabrication, while another multiphase controller product was expected to move toward customer sampling in 2027.

Deal Highlights India’s Growing Semiconductor Role

The acquisition is also significant for India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

While India has traditionally played a major role in semiconductor design and engineering, the government is now attempting to build a broader domestic ecosystem encompassing chip manufacturing, packaging, equipment and advanced semiconductor research.

Infineon described India as a strategic innovation hub, signalling that multinational semiconductor companies increasingly view the country as more than simply a source of engineering talent.

The C2i acquisition shows that Indian-developed semiconductor intellectual property is also becoming attractive to global companies competing in the AI infrastructure market.

Transaction Expected to Close in Q3 2026

Infineon has announced the acquisition agreement, but the transaction has not yet formally closed.

Completion is expected during the third quarter of calendar year 2026, subject to the normal closing process.

Once completed, C2i’s engineers and technologies will become part of Infineon’s broader effort to deliver efficient power-management systems for next-generation AI computing.

As global investment in AI data centres continues to accelerate, electricity efficiency is becoming almost as important as computing performance itself.

Infineon’s move to acquire C2i therefore represents both a bet on the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market and a vote of confidence in India’s growing semiconductor innovation ecosystem.
