Badminton’s Biggest Tournament Returns to India
The 2026 BWF World Championships officially began in New Delhi on Monday, bringing badminton’s biggest global tournament back to India after a 17-year gap.
The 30th edition of the championships is being held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium from August 17 to 23, with the world’s leading players competing for the sport’s most prestigious individual titles. India is hosting the event for the second time after Hyderabad staged the championships in 2009.
PV Sindhu Leads India’s Women’s Singles Challenge
Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu headlines India’s women’s singles challenge.
Sindhu enters the tournament as the ninth seed and is targeting a historic sixth World Championships medal. She has already won five medals at the event, including the women’s singles title in 2019.
Her participation has generated significant attention as she attempts to add another major achievement to an already decorated international career. Sindhu has also returned to winning form this season, having recently captured the Japan Open Super 750 title.
Satwik-Chirag Chase Maiden World Championship Title
India’s leading men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, will also be among the country’s biggest medal hopes.
The duo are seeded fifth and have already won major titles during the season. However, the World Championships remain an important target for the pair, who have previously secured bronze medals but are still searching for their first world title.
Their preparations have included managing Satwik’s recurring shoulder issue, which affected his participation in recent tournaments. The pair nevertheless remain focused on competing in front of a home crowd.
Lakshya Sen Also Carries Medal Hopes
Former World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen adds further strength to India’s men’s singles campaign.
Sen is seeded 14th and will be joined in the draw by rising Indian player Ayush Shetty. India has entered players across all five disciplines at the championships, giving the hosts multiple opportunities to challenge for medals.
India’s contingent also includes competitors in women’s doubles and mixed doubles, making the home challenge one of the country’s most significant at a World Championships.
India Fields Entries Across All Five Categories
India has two entries in each of the five disciplines at this year’s tournament.
The Indian contingent includes Sindhu and Unnati Hooda in women’s singles, Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty in men’s singles, Satwik-Chirag and Hariharan Amsakarunan-MR Arjun in men’s doubles, Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand Pullela and Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi in women’s doubles, and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto and Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Shivani Gadde in mixed doubles.
Home Crowd Adds Pressure and Opportunity
The return of the World Championships to India has created considerable expectations around the country’s leading players.
For Sindhu, the tournament offers an opportunity to become the first player from India to win six World Championships medals. For Satwik and Chirag, the home event provides another chance to convert their strong international record into a maiden world crown.
The tournament is also an important showcase for India’s growing status in global badminton, with a new generation of players competing alongside established stars.
Seven Days of World-Class Badminton Ahead
The championships will run through August 23, with the competition progressing from the opening rounds to the knockout stages before the finals.
With Sindhu, Satwik-Chirag, Lakshya Sen and several emerging Indian players in action, the home crowd will be hoping that India’s strong World Championships record continues in New Delhi.
The opening day marks the beginning of a major week for Indian badminton — and the country’s leading stars now have the opportunity to turn home advantage into medals.
