New Delhi, June 30: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh rain and thunderstorm alerts for several states as the southwest monsoon continues to advance across the country. The weather department has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, and gusty winds over the next few days, urging residents to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
According to the IMD, active monsoon conditions are expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall across large parts of north, central, east, northeast, and peninsular India.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Several States
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are also likely in isolated areas, particularly during the evening and night.
Possibility of Localised Flooding
The weather department warned that intense rainfall may lead to waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and disruption of road and rail traffic, especially in hilly and low-lying regions.
State disaster management authorities have been advised to remain on alert and coordinate with local administrations to respond quickly to any weather-related emergencies.
Advisory for Residents
The IMD has advised people living in vulnerable areas to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone locations.
Residents have also been urged to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and monitor weather updates through official channels.
Farmers and Travellers Asked to Remain Vigilant
Farmers have been encouraged to take protective measures for standing crops, ensure proper drainage in agricultural fields, and postpone activities that may be affected by heavy rainfall.
Travellers, particularly those planning journeys to hilly regions, have been advised to check weather forecasts before departing, as landslides and road blockages remain a possibility.
IMD to Continue Monitoring Weather Conditions
The India Meteorological Department said it will continue to closely monitor the progress of the southwest monsoon and issue updated forecasts as weather conditions evolve.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to follow official advisories and cooperate with local administrations to minimise risks associated with heavy rain and thunderstorms.
