The latest expansion is expected to facilitate seamless digital transactions for Indian travellers, businesses, and the Indian diaspora while deepening financial cooperation between the two countries.

The move reflects India’s continued efforts to position UPI as a globally accepted real-time payment system through partnerships with international financial institutions and payment service providers.

Strengthening India’s Digital Payment Ecosystem

The expansion allows Indian users to make payments through UPI-enabled applications at participating merchants in Greece, reducing dependence on cash and simplifying cross-border transactions.

Officials said the initiative will improve convenience for tourists, students, professionals, and businesses by enabling secure and instant digital payments abroad.

Milestone in Fintech Diplomacy

The launch of UPI services in Greece highlights India’s growing role in promoting digital public infrastructure through international cooperation.

Over the past few years, India has partnered with several countries to integrate UPI into their payment ecosystems, showcasing the country’s expertise in digital financial innovation.

Boost for Tourism and Bilateral Trade

Experts believe the expansion will strengthen tourism and commercial ties between India and Greece by making payments faster, safer, and more efficient.

Businesses serving Indian customers are expected to benefit from easier payment acceptance, while travellers will enjoy greater convenience during their visits.

UPI’s Growing Global Presence

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has become one of the world’s leading instant payment platforms, processing billions of transactions every month.

Its international expansion demonstrates increasing global confidence in India’s fintech capabilities and digital governance framework.

More International Partnerships Expected

Officials indicated that discussions are underway with additional countries to further expand UPI’s global reach.
