Indian Embassy Issues Safety Advisory as Protests and Local Curfews Hit Parts of France

Paris, October 22, 2026: The Indian Embassy in France has issued a fresh safety advisory for Indian nationals living in or travelling to the country, urging them to remain vigilant as protests, violent clashes and localised curfews continue in several areas.

The advisory asks Indians to avoid large gatherings and protest-hit locations, follow instructions from French authorities and monitor local updates for possible transport disruptions.

Indians Asked to Remain Vigilant

The Embassy of India in Paris advised Indian citizens to exercise caution in view of the continuing unrest and restrictions imposed in some parts of France.

It specifically asked people to stay away from crowded locations and places where demonstrations are underway.

Localised Curfews Imposed in Parts of France

French authorities have imposed partial or localised curfews in some areas following days of protests and violent incidents.

The restrictions are intended to prevent further rioting, looting and clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Protests Linked to Cost of Living and School Conditions

The unrest initially grew out of demonstrations over deteriorating school conditions and teacher shortages before expanding into wider protests over the cost of living and rising fuel prices.

Large demonstrations have taken place across France, including in Paris, with some protests turning violent.

Violence Reported During Demonstrations

Recent protests have seen vehicles and public property set on fire, shops looted and clashes between police and demonstrators.

French police have used tear gas and water cannons during some confrontations, while thousands of people have been detained during the unrest.

Indians Told to Avoid Protest Sites

The Indian Embassy has advised citizens not to travel unnecessarily through areas affected by demonstrations.

Those already in France have been asked to monitor local news and official government advisories before travelling, particularly in cities facing demonstrations or transport restrictions.

Public Transport May Face Disruptions

The embassy has also warned that protests and security measures could affect public transportation.

Indians have been advised to check transport schedules and official updates before travelling, especially in and around protest-affected areas.

Emergency Contact Issued by Indian Embassy

The embassy has provided an emergency helpline for Indian nationals requiring assistance.

In case of an emergency, Indian citizens can contact the Embassy of India in Paris at +33 6 48 34 00 63 or email cons.paris@mea.gov.in.

Macron Condemns Violence

French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the violence accompanying some of the demonstrations while distinguishing between peaceful protesters and those involved in rioting and looting.

He said those responsible for destruction and violence would face legal action and called for calm and unity.

Thousands Detained During Unrest

French authorities have detained thousands of people as security forces attempt to bring the situation under control.

The unrest has also resulted in injuries among police personnel and gendarmes, while public buildings and commercial establishments have been damaged in several locations.

Similar Advisory Issued for Italy

The Indian Embassy in Italy has also issued an advisory in response to demonstrations there, asking Indian nationals to remain cautious and avoid protest areas.

The developments highlight wider social unrest affecting parts of Europe amid concerns over living costs and public services.

Embassy Continues to Monitor Situation

Indian diplomatic officials are continuing to monitor developments in France and have urged citizens to follow local authorities’ instructions closely.

Travellers planning to visit France should remain aware that demonstrations, curfews and transport disruptions could change quickly depending on local conditions.
