Ranvir Shorey Files Police Complaint Over Death Threats Following Criticism of CJP Protest

Mumbai, October 14, 2026: Actor Ranvir Shorey has filed a police complaint after allegedly receiving death threats by email following his criticism of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The actor shared screenshots of the threatening messages on social media platform X and sought assistance from Cyber Dost, Maharashtra Cyber and Mumbai Police.

Actor Shares Screenshots of Threatening Emails

Shorey posted screenshots of two emails that allegedly contained abusive language and threats of physical violence. According to the messages shared by the actor, one sender claimed to be tracking his location and movements, while another allegedly threatened to attack him at an opportune moment.

The authenticity of the messages and the identities of the senders remain matters for investigation.

Mumbai Police Responds to Shorey’s Appeal

After Shorey tagged cybercrime authorities and Mumbai Police in his social media posts, the Mumbai Police account responded by asking him to share his contact details through a direct message.

The actor subsequently confirmed that he had filed an official police complaint. He also approached Maharashtra Cyber, seeking action over the alleged threats.

Threats Follow Criticism of CJP Demonstrations

The alleged threats came after Shorey criticised the CJP’s street protests over the controversy surrounding electoral rolls.

In his social media posts, the actor argued that political disagreements should be addressed through democratic and constitutional channels, including Parliament, elections and the courts, rather than through street demonstrations.

CJP Protest Demanded Election Commissioner’s Resignation

The youth-led CJP organised a protest in Delhi on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstrations were linked to allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has denied allegations of wrongdoing.

Shorey Thanks Supporters for Their Concern

Following the circulation of the news, Shorey thanked people who expressed concern for his safety. His complaint has also brought renewed attention to the risks faced by public figures who engage in political discussions on social media.

The actor’s criticism of the demonstrations and the subsequent threats have become part of a wider debate about political disagreements, online intimidation and freedom of expression.

No Confirmed Link Between Senders and CJP

Although Shorey said the alleged threats followed his criticism of the CJP protests, no verified evidence has established that the senders were officially connected to the party or its leadership.

The identities and motives of those responsible for the emails remain unconfirmed. Any connection between the messages and the protest organisers would need to be established through evidence gathered during the investigation.

CJP Leaders Detained in Separate Case

Separately, CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were reportedly ordered to remain in custody for five days following demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The protest was part of the movement’s campaign demanding the Election Commissioner’s resignation.

The detention is separate from Shorey’s complaint, and no established link between the two matters has been confirmed.

Police Investigation Expected to Examine Digital Evidence

Investigators may examine the email accounts, technical records and other available digital evidence to identify the senders and establish the circumstances surrounding the threats.

Further legal action will depend on the findings of the police investigation. Meanwhile, the case has renewed discussion about threats of violence against individuals expressing political opinions online.
