Wellington, November 8, 2026: Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma has created history by surpassing former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi’s record for the most sixes against New Zealand in One-Day International (ODI) cricket.
The milestone came during the second ODI between India and New Zealand at Wellington on November 7, where Rohit struck two sixes during his innings of 23 runs from 28 balls.
With those two maximums, Rohit took his tally against New Zealand to 51 ODI sixes, overtaking Afridi’s previous record of 50.
Rohit Sharma Creates History in Wellington
Rohit achieved the record during India’s chase of 135 runs in the rain-affected second ODI.
The experienced opener struck two fours and two sixes before being dismissed by New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson.
His first six brought him level with Afridi’s record, while the second took him to the top of the list.
Despite scoring only 23 runs, Rohit’s innings added another significant achievement to his international cricket career.

He is ahead of Shahid Afridi, who finished his career with 351 ODI sixes, and Chris Gayle, who struck 331.

His ability to clear the boundary consistently has been a defining feature of his batting career.
India Defeat New Zealand in Rain-Hit ODI
The record-breaking moment came during a closely contested match in Wellington.
New Zealand were bowled out for 134 runs, with Indian fast bowler Gurnoor Brar taking four wickets for 30 runs.
India faced difficulties during the chase, losing several early wickets.
However, KL Rahul’s unbeaten 26 helped the visitors reach 113/7 after 26 overs before rain stopped play.
India were declared winners by four runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
The victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.
Another Major Achievement for Rohit Sharma
Rohit has established himself as one of the most successful six-hitters in international cricket.
His latest achievement reflects his consistent attacking performances against New Zealand over several years.
Although his contribution in Wellington was relatively brief, the two sixes proved enough to break a longstanding record held by one of Pakistan’s most aggressive batters.
Rohit Sharma Eyes More Records
With the ODI series continuing, Rohit will have opportunities to extend his six-hitting record against New Zealand.
India’s next match is scheduled for November 10 in Hamilton.
The team will look to continue its winning momentum, while Rohit will aim to deliver a bigger innings after a relatively quiet start to the series.
