Google Announces $15 Billion AI Infrastructure Push in Finland, Signs Nuclear Power Deal

HELSINKI, September 9: Google has announced plans to invest €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in AI and data-centre infrastructure in Finland over 2027–2028, marking its largest investment in Europe to date.

AI Infrastructure Expansion Across Finland

The investment will support data centres and related infrastructure in Hamina, Muhos, Vaala and Kajaani, along with upgrades involving electricity networks, clean energy and battery projects.

Google expects the expansion to support thousands of jobs and strengthen Finland’s position as a major European hub for AI infrastructure.

Google Signs 22-Year Nuclear Power Deal

Google has also signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish utility Fortum covering up to 50% of the capacity of the Loviisa nuclear power plant.

The agreement begins in 2028 and is designed to support the plant’s lifetime extension through 2050 while providing low-carbon electricity for Google’s growing operations.

Google, Fortum Explore More Clean Energy

The two companies have also agreed to explore new nuclear power, renewable energy and energy-storage solutions.

The deal reflects growing electricity demand from AI data centres and technology companies’ push to secure reliable, low-carbon energy supplies.
