NEW DELHI, September 8: India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative aimed at shaping secure, resilient and interoperable 6G networks, giving New Delhi a role in early global discussions on next-generation telecom standards.
Focus on Secure and Trusted 6G
India has joined the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, coordinated by the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
The initiative focuses on:
- Secure and resilient 6G networks
- Global interoperability
- Trusted artificial intelligence
- Stronger digital supply chains
- International cooperation on standards
Participating governments have committed to deeper cooperation on 6G over the coming year and beyond.
India-US Talks Drive Announcement
India’s participation was announced after Union Minister of State Jitin Prasada met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial in North Carolina.
The two sides also discussed greater cooperation in semiconductors, AI and data centres.
Bharat 6G Mission Continues in Parallel
India is separately pursuing its domestic ambitions through the Bharat 6G Mission and Bharat 6G Alliance, with the goal of becoming a significant developer and supplier of 6G technologies and intellectual property.
The global initiative is currently a policy-coordination framework and does not by itself announce funding, spectrum allocation or a specific Indian 6G rollout timetable.
India’s entry gives it an opportunity to influence global discussions before technical standards for 6G are finalised.
