Ashok Dham Temple Stampede in Bihar Leaves Seven Dead, Dozens Injured

LAKHISARAI, BIHAR | August 17, 2026

Seven Devotees Killed in Crowd Crush

At least seven devotees were killed and 14 others injured in a stampede at the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday morning, turning a major religious gathering into a deadly tragedy.

The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered during the holy month of Shravan to offer water to Lord Shiva on the third Monday of the month. Officials said the situation became chaotic amid the heavy rush of worshippers.

Panic Erupts Amid Heavy Devotee Rush

According to officials, the incident took place near Ashok Dham halt railway station, located close to the temple. A large number of devotees had gathered in the area before the incident.

Authorities are investigating what exactly triggered the sudden crowd movement. Initial reports linked the panic to an electrical pole or wire-related incident, with fears of electrocution contributing to the rush. However, officials have stressed that the precise circumstances are still being investigated.

The arrival of two trains around the same time also reportedly intensified the crowd near the railway halt, according to the Lakhisarai district administration. A barricade subsequently collapsed under the pressure of the gathering crowd.

Several People Injured

Fourteen people were reported injured in the incident, according to Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar.

The injured were taken to hospitals for medical treatment, while police and district administration officials reached the site and began managing the situation. Authorities have also been working to control the crowd and assist affected families.

The death toll was initially reported as six by state police and Reuters, but subsequent updates from local authorities and multiple Indian media outlets put the toll at seven.

Investigation Underway

Officials have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the crowd crush.

The authorities are examining the role of the heavy congregation, the movement of passengers from the nearby railway station, the reported electrical incident and the collapse of barricades.

Because the incident unfolded during a major religious gathering, crowd-management arrangements are expected to come under scrutiny as investigators establish the sequence of events.

Bihar Government Announces Compensation

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the deaths and directed the administration to ensure prompt medical treatment for those injured.

The state government also announced ₹4 lakh in ex-gratia compensation for the family of each deceased devotee.

Officials have been instructed to provide necessary assistance to the injured and the families affected by the tragedy.

Fresh Questions Over Crowd Safety

The Ashok Dham incident has renewed concerns over crowd-management arrangements at major religious gatherings in India.

Large numbers of devotees regularly gather at temples during important religious occasions, creating significant challenges for local administrations, police and transport authorities.

The tragedy comes only months after another deadly temple stampede in Bihar’s Nalanda district, where nine people were killed in March during a large religious gathering.

The latest incident is therefore likely to intensify calls for stronger crowd-control measures, better coordination around railway stations and improved emergency preparedness at major pilgrimage sites.

Authorities Continue Relief and Safety Operations

Police and district officials remain engaged in relief operations while investigators work to determine the exact cause of the stampede.

With the death toll now reported at seven and several others injured, authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and provide medical and administrative assistance to affected devotees and their families.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of effective crowd management during large religious gatherings, particularly when temples and nearby transport facilities experience sudden surges in visitors.
