Indian Stock Market Opens Under Pressure as Global Risks and Crude Oil Prices Keep Investors Cautious

MUMBAI, INDIA | August 17, 2026

Sensex and Nifty Fall in Early Trade

Indian equity markets opened lower on Monday as elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and weak global cues weighed on investor sentiment.

The BSE Sensex fell more than 300 points in early trading, while the Nifty 50 slipped below the 24,300 mark. The decline extended the market’s recent weakness as investors remained cautious amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.

Reuters reported that by early trading, the Nifty 50 was down 0.34% at 24,282.45, while the Sensex had declined 0.46% to 77,647.

Crude Oil Remains a Major Concern

One of the biggest concerns for Indian investors is the continued rise in crude oil prices.

Brent crude was trading around $89 a barrel, with prices remaining elevated amid geopolitical tensions linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and uncertainty surrounding energy flows through the region.

Higher crude prices are particularly important for India because the country imports a large share of its crude oil requirements. Sustained increases in energy costs can put pressure on inflation, the trade balance and corporate margins.

Geopolitical Tensions Weigh on Risk Appetite

Investors are also closely monitoring developments in the Middle East.

Persistent uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict has kept global markets cautious and contributed to volatility in oil prices. Asian markets were largely subdued on Monday, with investors assessing the potential economic consequences of prolonged energy-market disruptions.

The combination of higher oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty has reduced investors’ willingness to take aggressive positions in riskier assets.

IT and PSU Stocks Under Pressure

The weakness was visible across several major sectors during early trading.

According to market reports, IT and public-sector undertaking stocks were among the major areas facing selling pressure. However, some sectors showed resilience, with pharmaceutical and metal stocks edging higher during the early session.

Reuters reported that nine of the 16 major sectors were trading lower, while the broader small-cap and mid-cap indices were relatively stable.

Rupee Also Faces Pressure

The Indian rupee weakened to around ₹95.49 against the US dollar in early trading.

Traders said state-run banks appeared to be selling dollars, which they believed was part of Reserve Bank of India intervention aimed at limiting excessive volatility in the currency. Brent crude was around $88.80 a barrel at the time.

A weaker rupee combined with expensive crude can increase India’s import costs, making currency and oil movements particularly important for domestic markets.

Investors Watch Global and Domestic Cues

Market participants are now closely watching crude oil prices, developments in the Middle East, global equity trends and currency movements for further direction.

The weak opening follows a difficult previous week for Indian equities. The Nifty 50 ended the previous trading week at 24,366, while the Sensex closed at 78,009.25, with both benchmarks registering weekly declines.

With oil prices remaining elevated and geopolitical risks unresolved, investors are expected to remain selective and cautious.

Market Outlook Remains Cautious

Monday’s opening highlights the sensitivity of Indian equities to global energy prices and geopolitical developments.

If crude remains near current elevated levels, investors will continue to monitor its impact on inflation, the rupee and corporate earnings. Any easing in geopolitical tensions, however, could provide relief to global markets and reduce pressure on energy prices.

For now, Dalal Street remains focused on whether the market can recover from the early losses or whether elevated oil prices and global uncertainty will continue to dominate trading sentiment.
