New Delhi, July 1: The Ashadha Krishna Paksha, the waning phase of the Moon in the Hindu lunar calendar, begins today following the conclusion of Guru Purnima celebrations observed across India. The fortnight holds deep religious and spiritual significance for millions of Hindus, who observe various rituals, fasting practices, and devotional activities during this period.
According to the traditional Hindu Panchang, Krishna Paksha starts immediately after the Full Moon (Purnima) and continues until Amavasya (New Moon), symbolising a period of reflection, devotion, and spiritual discipline.
Spiritual Significance of Krishna Paksha
Religious scholars describe Ashadha Krishna Paksha as an auspicious period for prayer, meditation, self-discipline, and remembrance of ancestors. Many devotees dedicate additional time to reading sacred scriptures, visiting temples, and participating in devotional gatherings.
Several spiritual organisations also begin special discourses and religious programmes during this fortnight.
Temple Rituals Continue Across the Country
Temples in states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and West Bengal witnessed devotees offering prayers and seeking blessings as the new lunar phase commenced.
Priests performed regular rituals while encouraging devotees to follow traditional observances associated with the sacred fortnight.
Preparations for Upcoming Festivals
The beginning of Ashadha Krishna Paksha also marks the countdown to several important festivals and religious observances that will take place in the coming weeks according to the Hindu calendar.
Religious institutions have started preparations for temple events, community prayers, and cultural programmes associated with the upcoming festive season.
Importance of the Hindu Lunar Calendar
India follows a rich tradition of lunar-based festivals and rituals, with many religious observances determined by the movement of the Moon rather than the Gregorian calendar.
The Hindu Panchang plays a vital role in deciding auspicious dates for festivals, pilgrimages, ceremonies, and spiritual practices observed throughout the year.
Devotees Encouraged to Follow Traditional Practices
Religious leaders have encouraged devotees to use the fortnight for spiritual growth, charitable activities, and community service while maintaining harmony and compassion in daily life.
Authorities reported peaceful observances across the country, with temples and pilgrimage centres making arrangements for devotees visiting during the new lunar phase.
