Singapore, October 30, 2026: Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is investigating a major security incident that may have affected about $6.3 billion in digital assets, while the company has assured users that their funds are safe. The incident triggered fresh volatility across cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin and other major tokens falling sharply.
Compromised Laptop Suspected
Binance said its initial investigation suggests that a DevOps engineer’s laptop may have been compromised, allowing an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.
Around $3 Billion in Assets Frozen
Binance said it has been working with blockchain partners and other cryptocurrency companies to trace and freeze affected assets.
About $3 billion worth of assets had been frozen on-chain, while stablecoin issuers including Tether and Circle also moved to block funds linked to the incident.
User Funds Reported Safe
The exchange has repeatedly said that customer funds remain safe and that losses linked to the breach will be covered through its SAFU emergency fund and company resources.
Binance also said it plans to release an updated Proof of Reserves after remediation work is completed.
Deposits and Withdrawals Temporarily Suspended
As a precaution, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while carrying out additional security checks.
The company also revoked affected authorisations and contacted law enforcement and blockchain intelligence firms to assist in tracing the attackers and recovering assets.
Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies Slide
News of the security incident weighed heavily on crypto markets.
Bitcoin dropped below $79,000 and later traded near a six-week low, while Ether and several other major digital currencies also declined as investors reacted to uncertainty surrounding the breach.
Binance Warns Users About Scams
The exchange urged customers to rely only on official Binance communications and remain cautious of phishing links, fake messages and requests for account information that could exploit uncertainty surrounding the incident.
A full technical report is expected after Binance completes its investigation.
