AICHI-NAGOYA, October 1: India’s men’s volleyball campaign at the Asian Games 2026 ended in the quarterfinals after Pakistan registered a commanding 3-0 straight-sets victory on Thursday morning in Aichi, Japan.
Pakistan won the contest 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 in one hour and 20 minutes, producing a stronger performance in attack, blocking and defensive recovery to advance to the semifinals.
Pakistan Take Opening Set 25-19
The opening set remained competitive during its early stages, with both teams exchanging points before Pakistan began to pull away.
Pakistan’s attack proved significantly more effective as the set progressed, converting 17 of 24 spike attempts.
India struggled to produce the same consistency at the net and eventually conceded the opening set 25-19.
India Fight Back in Second Set
India produced their strongest period of the match during the second set.
The Indian team moved ahead at different stages and held a three-point advantage at 16-13 before Pakistan gradually closed the gap.
India continued to challenge until the final points, making it the closest set of the quarterfinal.
Pakistan Recover to Win Second Set 25-23
Pakistan levelled the score at 19-19 after India had led during the middle phase of the set.
India managed to save one set point but could not extend the contest further.
Pakistan eventually closed the second set 25-23, moving within one set of a place in the semifinals.
Third Set Turns One-Sided
Pakistan took early control of the third set and quickly established a substantial lead.
They moved ahead 8-4 and later stretched their advantage to 22-14, leaving India with little room for a comeback.
India saved some match points before Pakistan completed the set 25-18 and sealed the quarterfinal.
Pakistan Win Match in Straight Sets
The final scoreline read:
Pakistan 3-0 India — 25-19, 25-23, 25-18.
Pakistan’s ability to maintain pressure throughout all three sets prevented India from forcing the match into a fourth set.
Murad Khan Leads Pakistan’s Attack
Murad Khan emerged as Pakistan’s standout performer in the quarterfinal.
He finished with 19 points and successfully converted 18 of his 33 spike attempts.
His attacking presence proved particularly important whenever India attempted to regain momentum.
Ashwal Rai India’s Leading Scorer
For India, Ashwal Rai finished as the team’s leading scorer with nine points.
India captain Jerome Vinith, along with other key attackers, had performed strongly earlier in the tournament but found it difficult to break down Pakistan’s defensive structure consistently in the knockout contest.
Pakistan Dominate Attacking Statistics
The difference between the teams was particularly visible in attacking efficiency.
Pakistan completed 50 successful spikes from 83 attempts, while India managed 33 successful spikes from 81 attempts.
Pakistan therefore converted around 61% of their spike attempts compared with approximately 41% for India.
Pakistan Also Stronger at the Block
Pakistan held the advantage in blocking efficiency as well.
Their blockers repeatedly disrupted India’s attacking rhythm and made it difficult for the Indian hitters to produce clean winners.
India managed some successful blocks but could not create enough pressure to change the momentum of the match.
Defensive Recovery Makes Difference
Pakistan also recorded stronger numbers in defensive digs.
Their players repeatedly kept rallies alive after Indian attacks, allowing Pakistan to transition quickly from defence into attack.
This defensive discipline helped them maintain control during crucial moments, particularly in the second set.
India Had Enjoyed Strong Group Stage
The quarterfinal defeat came after an impressive group-stage campaign for India.
India topped Pool C after defeating Vietnam 3-0, Hong Kong 3-0 and Qatar 3-2.
The victory over Qatar was particularly significant because India recovered after losing the opening two sets to complete a five-set comeback.
Quarterfinal Brings Medal Hopes to an End
India entered the knockout phase hoping to challenge for its first Asian Games men’s volleyball medal in four decades.
However, the straight-sets defeat means India’s medal campaign in the event is now over.
India last won an Asian Games medal in men’s volleyball at Seoul 1986, where the team secured bronze.
India Have Won Three Asian Games Volleyball Medals
India has previously won three medals in men’s volleyball at the Asian Games.
The country won bronze at Tokyo 1958, silver at Jakarta 1962 and another bronze at Seoul 1986.
The wait for another podium finish will now continue beyond the 2026 edition.
Pakistan Continue Strong Record Against India
The result also continued Pakistan’s recent run of victories against India in major Asian Games volleyball encounters.
Pakistan had defeated India in their previous Asian Games meetings as well, including victories at the Jakarta 2018 and Hangzhou editions.
Thursday’s result therefore extended Pakistan’s recent advantage in the continental rivalry.
Pakistan Reach Semifinals After Long Wait
The victory sends Pakistan into the Asian Games semifinals for the first time in more than six decades.
Pakistan’s previous top-four finish in the competition came in 1962, when the team won a bronze medal.
The 3-0 quarterfinal victory therefore represents an important result for Pakistan’s volleyball programme.
India Exit After Promising Tournament
Despite the disappointment of the quarterfinal defeat, India’s campaign included several encouraging performances.
The team finished unbeaten in its group and produced a notable comeback victory over Qatar before reaching the last eight.
Against Pakistan, however, India struggled to reproduce the attacking efficiency that had helped it progress through the group stage.
Pakistan Advance as India’s Campaign Ends
Pakistan will now move into the semifinal stage as it looks to secure its first Asian Games men’s volleyball medal since 1962.
For India, the 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 defeat brings an end to a campaign that had begun with three consecutive victories but ultimately stopped one match short of the medal rounds.
