Greater Noida, October 7, 2026: A major tragedy was averted after an air-conditioned double-decker sleeper bus caught fire on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, with the driver quickly stopping the vehicle and evacuating all 32 passengers before flames engulfed the bus. No injuries or casualties were reported.
Driver Spots Smoke, Stops Bus Immediately
Police said smoke began emerging from the engine while the bus was moving on the expressway.
The driver immediately pulled the vehicle to the side and alerted passengers to get out, allowing everyone to escape before the fire spread through the bus.
All 32 Passengers Escape Safely
All 32 people travelling on the bus were evacuated safely.
The quick response proved crucial, as the vehicle was soon engulfed in flames. Authorities confirmed that no passenger was injured.
Bus Was Travelling From Delhi to Bihar
Reports said the private sleeper bus was travelling from Delhi towards Bihar when the incident occurred near Sector 148 on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.
While one report identified the destination as Samastipur, police details cited by Hindustan Times said the bus was travelling from Delhi’s Red Fort towards Muzaffarpur.
Four Fire Engines Deployed
Police alerted the fire department soon after the incident.
Four fire tenders were deployed, and firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after around 45 minutes of operations.
Short Circuit Suspected
Preliminary investigation indicates that a short circuit near the engine may have triggered the fire.
Officials said the exact cause remains under investigation.
Driver’s Quick Action Prevents Disaster
The driver’s decision to stop immediately after noticing smoke is being seen as a key reason all passengers survived.
The incident could have turned significantly more dangerous had the fire spread before passengers were able to leave the vehicle.
Passengers Helped With Onward Journey
Most passengers were residents of Bihar.
Transport officials said arrangements were being made to help them continue their journey after the bus was destroyed in the fire.
Incident Raises Sleeper Bus Safety Concerns
The fire occurred less than two weeks after another sleeper bus blaze on the Yamuna Expressway killed nine passengers, bringing renewed attention to fire safety and maintenance standards in long-distance buses.
