Amit Shah Launches Plantation Campaign in Delhi

New Delhi, July 7: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ plantation campaign in Delhi, announcing an ambitious target of planting 70 lakh saplings across the national capital. The initiative aims to enhance Delhi’s green cover, improve environmental sustainability, and encourage citizens to dedicate a tree to their mothers as a symbol of gratitude and respect.

The campaign is part of the Centre’s broader mission to promote environmental conservation and increase public participation in tree plantation drives across the country.

Campaign Focuses on Environmental Protection

Addressing the gathering during the launch event, Amit Shah said tree plantation is one of the most effective ways to combat climate change, reduce pollution, and improve ecological balance.

He urged citizens, educational institutions, resident welfare associations, government departments, and private organisations to actively participate in the campaign and contribute towards making Delhi greener.

Target of 70 Lakh Saplings

Under the campaign, authorities aim to plant 70 lakh saplings at parks, roadsides, schools, government offices, institutional campuses, residential colonies, and other public spaces.

Officials said suitable native tree species will be planted to ensure better survival rates and long-term environmental benefits.

Community Participation Encouraged

The campaign places strong emphasis on public involvement, encouraging individuals to plant and nurture trees in honour of their mothers.

Volunteers, students, environmental groups, and local communities are expected to participate in plantation drives throughout the monsoon season.

Government agencies will also monitor the maintenance and survival of the planted saplings to maximise the campaign’s impact.

Improving Delhi’s Green Cover

Delhi continues to undertake several initiatives aimed at improving air quality and increasing urban greenery. The large-scale plantation drive is expected to contribute to better air quality, enhanced biodiversity, reduced urban heat, and improved environmental resilience.

Experts believe sustained tree plantation and proper maintenance can significantly strengthen the capital’s ecological health over the coming years.

Supporting Sustainable Development

The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign aligns with India’s broader environmental goals, including climate action, sustainable urban development, and public awareness regarding environmental protection.

Officials expressed confidence that the initiative would inspire citizens to adopt environmentally responsible practices while strengthening community participation in conservation efforts.

The campaign is expected to continue across multiple locations in Delhi during the current monsoon season.
