IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Delhi Rain

New Delhi, July 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi-NCR after heavy rainfall and thunderstorms affected several parts of the National Capital Region. According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon remains active over north India, and intermittent spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over the next few days.

The fresh spell of rain brought relief from high temperatures but also caused waterlogging and traffic congestion in several areas of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.

IMD Forecasts More Rain

According to the IMD, favourable monsoon conditions are expected to continue, with moderate to heavy rainfall likely at isolated places across Delhi-NCR.

The department has advised residents to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall, particularly in low-lying areas that are vulnerable to waterlogging.

Weather officials also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds during the forecast period.

Relief from Heat, Rise in Humidity

The rainfall has led to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures across the region, offering much-needed relief from humid weather conditions.

However, the increase in moisture levels has also resulted in high humidity, making the weather uncomfortable between rain spells.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to remain below recent levels as cloud cover persists over the coming days.

Traffic and Civic Advisory

Heavy rain affected traffic movement across several major roads, with slow-moving vehicles reported in multiple parts of Delhi-NCR due to water accumulation.

Authorities have advised commuters to:

  • Check weather and traffic updates before travelling.
  • Drive cautiously during heavy rainfall.
  • Avoid waterlogged roads wherever possible.
  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning.

Municipal agencies have deployed teams to monitor drainage systems and respond to complaints related to waterlogging and fallen trees.

Monsoon Active Across North India

The IMD stated that the southwest monsoon remains active across large parts of north and central India.

Apart from Delhi-NCR, several neighbouring states are also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next few days as monsoon activity continues.

The weather department will closely monitor evolving conditions and issue further advisories if required.

Citizens Advised to Stay Updated

Officials have urged residents to follow updates issued by the IMD and local authorities, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Emergency services remain on alert to respond to weather-related incidents, while civic agencies continue efforts to minimise disruption caused by the active monsoon.
