India, Indonesia Sign BrahMos and Astra Deals

Jakarta, July 7: India and Indonesia significantly strengthened their strategic partnership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto oversaw the signing of a series of landmark agreements covering defence, maritime security, space technology, critical minerals, and advanced technology cooperation. Among the major outcomes were agreements related to the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system and Astra air-to-air missile cooperation, marking a major boost to defence ties between the two countries.

The agreements were signed following delegation-level talks in Jakarta, with both leaders describing the developments as a new chapter in the India–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Major Boost to Defence Cooperation

One of the most significant announcements was Indonesia’s decision to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, while an agreement was also signed to expand cooperation on the Astra air-to-air missile programme.

The defence package includes collaboration in military technology, training, maintenance support, and defence-industrial cooperation, strengthening Indonesia’s defence capabilities while reinforcing India’s growing position as a defence exporter.

Expanding Maritime Security Partnership

Recognising the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region, both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in maritime security, naval coordination, maritime domain awareness, and the protection of critical sea lanes.

The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, while enhancing cooperation on the blue economy and regional stability.

Collaboration in Space and Emerging Technologies

Beyond defence, India and Indonesia expanded cooperation in space technology, satellite applications, digital connectivity, artificial intelligence, and critical technologies.

The agreements also include collaboration in critical minerals, resilient supply chains, industrial manufacturing, education, and innovation, reflecting the broadening scope of bilateral ties.

Strengthening Economic and Strategic Ties

Both leaders emphasised the need to increase bilateral trade, investment, and industrial cooperation. New initiatives covering critical minerals, steel production, digital public infrastructure, and technology partnerships are expected to create fresh opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Officials said the agreements would contribute to stronger economic integration while supporting sustainable development and regional prosperity.

A New Chapter in India–Indonesia Relations

Prime Minister Modi stated that the agreements represent a major step forward in the comprehensive strategic partnership established between the two countries. President Prabowo also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to expanding long-term cooperation with India across defence, technology, maritime security, and economic development.

The outcomes of the visit are expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and reinforce cooperation between two key Indo-Pacific democracies.
