NEW DELHI, September 5: India is celebrating Teachers’ Day 2026 today to honour the contribution of teachers and commemorate the birth anniversary of former President, philosopher and renowned educator Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions across the country are organising special programmes, cultural activities and ceremonies to recognise the role of teachers in shaping students and strengthening society.
Why Teachers’ Day Is Celebrated on September 5
Teachers’ Day is observed every year on September 5, the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Radhakrishnan was a distinguished scholar, philosopher and teacher who later served as the second President of India.
The day is dedicated to acknowledging the contribution of educators and highlighting their role in guiding young people and building the nation.
President Murmu Extends Greetings
President Droupadi Murmu extended her greetings to teachers across India on the occasion.
In her message, she highlighted the role teachers play in nurturing talent, strengthening character and encouraging students to strive for excellence.
The President also urged educators to continuously update their knowledge, embrace technology and adopt innovative teaching methods.
National Teachers’ Awards at Vigyan Bhawan
A major highlight of Teachers’ Day 2026 is the National Teachers’ Awards ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
President Murmu is conferring awards on 48 school teachers and 21 teachers and faculty members from higher education institutions and polytechnics, taking the total number of awardees to 69.
The awards recognise exceptional contribution in areas such as teaching, innovation, research, mentoring and educational outreach.
Students Honour Their Teachers
Across schools and colleges, students are marking the occasion through speeches, cultural programmes, performances, greeting cards and special classroom activities.
In many institutions, senior students temporarily take on teaching roles as part of traditional Teachers’ Day celebrations.
Focus on Technology and Innovative Learning
Teachers’ Day 2026 also comes at a time when India’s education system is increasingly adopting digital tools, artificial intelligence, online learning platforms and technology-enabled teaching methods.
President Murmu’s message stressed that teachers should promote independent thinking and cultivate a spirit of enquiry among students while adapting to changing educational needs.

Dr Radhakrishnan remains one of India’s most respected educationists and philosophers.
