New Delhi, June 26: Political leaders, civil society organisations, educational institutions, and social groups across India observed the 51st anniversary of the Emergency on Friday with remembrance events, seminars, exhibitions, and public programmes highlighting one of the most significant periods in the country’s democratic history.
The Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, remained in force for 21 months until March 1977. During the period, civil liberties were suspended, press censorship was enforced, and thousands of political leaders and activists were detained under preventive detention laws.
Commemorative Events Held Across the Country
Special programmes were organised in several states to remember the events of the Emergency and honour individuals who opposed the suspension of democratic rights.
Public discussions, exhibitions, and documentary screenings focused on the importance of safeguarding constitutional values, freedom of expression, and democratic institutions. Educational institutions also conducted awareness programmes explaining the historical significance of the Emergency to students.
Leaders Pay Tribute to Democracy Defenders
Political leaders from different parties shared messages remembering those who were imprisoned or participated in democratic movements during the Emergency.
Several speakers described the period as a reminder of the importance of protecting civil liberties, constitutional governance, and the independence of democratic institutions.
