IIT Madras Launches ‘UDYOG’ Finishing School to Bridge Industry Skills Gap

Chennai, October 22, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched UDYOG — Upskilling and Development for Young Graduates, a new industry-oriented finishing school designed to prepare biotechnology and biomanufacturing students for real-world jobs.

The programme is aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and the practical skills increasingly demanded by biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies.

Programme Focuses on Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing

UDYOG has been designed specifically for students pursuing biotechnology and allied disciplines.

The programme combines academic concepts with practical exposure to laboratory techniques, industrial processes and biomanufacturing operations.

Open to Students Across India

The finishing school is open to pre-final-year and final-year students pursuing BTech, MTech and MSc programmes in biotechnology and related fields at institutions across India.

This allows students outside IIT Madras to also participate in the training initiative.

Three-Stage Training Model

UDYOG will use a structured training model combining online learning with practical laboratory and industry exposure.

Participants will first undergo online academic modules before moving to hands-on laboratory training and pilot-scale operations.

The programme will also offer opportunities for industry internships, helping students understand how biotechnology processes function in commercial environments.

Hands-On Skills at Centre of Programme

IIT Madras has positioned UDYOG as a practical-skills programme rather than a conventional classroom course.

Students will gain exposure to laboratory equipment, production processes and industry-relevant techniques that are often difficult to access through regular university coursework.

First Batch Starts in January 2027

The first batch of UDYOG is scheduled to begin on January 18, 2027.

Early-bird registration will remain open until December 15, 2026.

Programme Seeks to Improve Job Readiness

The initiative comes amid growing demand for professionals with practical experience in India’s expanding biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries.

IIT Madras believes specialised training can help graduates move more smoothly from academic programmes into industry roles.

Industry Exposure to Help Students Understand Real Operations

A key component of UDYOG is exposure to pilot-scale and industrial operations.

This is intended to familiarise students with processes used outside academic laboratories and help them understand regulatory, manufacturing and operational requirements within biotechnology companies.

Initiative Linked to Biofoundry Ecosystem

The programme is being developed as a biofoundry finishing school, reflecting IIT Madras’ broader focus on synthetic biology, biotechnology and advanced biomanufacturing.

The initiative is expected to strengthen links between universities, research laboratories and companies looking for industry-ready graduates.

IIT Madras Director Highlights Industry-Academia Link

IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti has described the initiative as an effort to strengthen the connection between academic institutions and industry.

The programme is expected to help students gain practical experience while giving companies access to graduates who are more familiar with real-world biotechnology operations.

Addressing India’s Biotechnology Skills Gap

India’s biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors are expanding rapidly, creating demand for professionals with specialised technical expertise.

However, employers often highlight a gap between university-level theoretical education and practical skills required in industrial laboratories and manufacturing environments.

UDYOG is intended to address that gap by providing targeted training before graduates enter the workforce.

New Pathway for Biotechnology Students

Through online learning, practical laboratory training, pilot-scale exposure and internships, the programme aims to create a clearer pathway from college to employment.

If successful, the finishing-school model could also provide a framework for similar industry-oriented training programmes in other specialised technology sectors.
