New Delhi, October 8, 2026: Amazon has begun a fresh round of layoffs, primarily affecting its Stores business, as the e-commerce giant continues restructuring its corporate workforce. The latest cuts are expected to impact fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees across the US, India and the UK.
Stores Business Hit by Latest Layoffs
Amazon confirmed that the latest job cuts are concentrated mainly in its Stores division, which operates the company’s core e-commerce business.
Employees in areas including customer service and selling-partner services are among those reportedly affected.
Employees in India Also Impacted
The layoffs are not limited to the United States.
Workers in India and the United Kingdom are also part of the latest round, according to Reuters. The company has not publicly disclosed a country-wise breakdown of the affected roles.
Fewer Than 1,000 Jobs Affected This Time
The latest round is smaller than Amazon’s previous large-scale workforce reductions.
Reuters reported that fewer than 1,000 white-collar positions are expected to be eliminated in this round.
Employees Receive Layoff Emails
Some affected employees said they received emails informing them that their positions had been eliminated.
The cuts come even as Amazon is running major promotional shopping events, underlining the company’s continued focus on streamlining corporate operations.
Around 30,000 Jobs Cut Since Last Year
The latest layoffs follow much larger reductions across Amazon’s corporate workforce.
Amazon has cut roughly 30,000 corporate roles since last year, including a major round of 16,000 job cuts announced in January 2026.
Amazon Continues Restructuring
The company said the latest changes are intended to better align teams with current business priorities.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been working to reduce organisational layers, improve efficiency and eliminate roles or projects that the company considers less critical.
AI Investment Remains a Major Priority
Amazon is simultaneously spending heavily on artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
The company has previously acknowledged that greater use of generative AI and AI agents is expected to change the nature of work inside Amazon and could reduce the need for some existing roles.
India Remains Important to Amazon’s AI Plans
Despite the layoffs, Amazon continues to make major investments in India.
Earlier this year, the company announced an additional $13 billion investment in AI and cloud infrastructure in India, taking its planned investment in the country to $48 billion between 2026 and 2030.
Tech Sector Layoffs Continue Amid AI Shift
Amazon’s latest cuts reflect a wider restructuring trend across the technology industry, where companies are reducing some traditional corporate roles while redirecting billions of dollars towards AI, cloud computing and automation.
For employees, the shift is increasingly changing which skills and positions technology companies prioritise.
