RBI Rate Hike Expectations Rise as Inflation Pressure Builds; 25 bps Increase Seen Likely

Mumbai, October 5, 2026: Expectations of a fresh interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India have strengthened ahead of its upcoming monetary policy decision, with economists increasingly forecasting a 25 basis point increase in the repo rate amid persistent inflationary pressures.

RBI Policy Meeting in Focus

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee is meeting from October 5 to October 7. Investors, borrowers and financial markets are closely watching the outcome as inflation remains a key concern for policymakers.

25 Basis Point Hike Expected

A majority of economists surveyed ahead of the policy decision expect the RBI to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points.

If implemented, the benchmark repo rate would rise from 5.25% to 5.50%.

Inflation Remains a Major Concern

Retail inflation has remained above the RBI’s medium-term target, increasing pressure on the central bank to take measures aimed at controlling price growth.

Persistent inflation across several categories has strengthened expectations that monetary policy could become tighter.

Strong Growth Gives RBI More Room

India’s economy continues to record relatively strong growth, which may provide the central bank with greater flexibility to raise interest rates without significantly weakening overall economic activity.

Policymakers will, however, have to balance inflation control with the need to sustain growth.

Home and Car Loan EMIs Could Rise

A repo rate increase can eventually lead banks and financial institutions to raise lending rates.

Borrowers with floating-rate home loans, car loans and other credit products could therefore see an increase in their monthly EMIs.

Rupee and Bond Markets Closely Watching

The RBI’s decision will also be important for the rupee and government bond markets.

Changes in domestic interest rates can influence foreign investment flows, bond yields and the movement of the Indian currency against the US dollar.

RBI Decision Due on October 7

The final monetary policy decision is scheduled to be announced on October 7, 2026.

Markets will closely track not only the repo rate decision but also the RBI’s commentary on inflation, economic growth and the future direction of monetary policy.
