Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to Run Special Durga Puja Joyrides, Including Tagore-Inspired ‘Mukta Dhara’

The UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) will introduce six additional joyride services from October 1, 2026, offering tourists special heritage train experiences during the Durga Puja festive season.

The special schedule will include four single-trip services between Darjeeling and Ghum and two round-trip services between Kurseong and Mahanadi.

The Darjeeling-Ghum services will be operated using diesel locomotives. Trains from Darjeeling are scheduled to depart at 9:20 AM and 11:25 AM, while return services from Ghum will leave at 10:25 AM and 12:30 PM. The proposed fare is ₹800 per passenger for a single journey.

A major attraction will be the steam-hauled “Red Panda” joyride on the Kurseong-Mahanadi route. The train is scheduled to leave Kurseong at 9 AM and return from Mahanadi at 10 AM, with a proposed fare of ₹1,530 per passenger.

Another special service, named “Mukta Dhara,” will operate with a diesel locomotive between Kurseong and Mahanadi. It will depart Kurseong at 3:15 PM and begin its return journey from Mahanadi at 4 PM, with a proposed fare of ₹1,030.

The Mukta Dhara service has been named in tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Railway officials have linked the journey with the natural beauty of the Paglajhora stream and Tagore’s celebrated work Mukta Dhara.

A special run of Mukta Dhara is also planned at Mahanadi Railway Station toward the end of September, ahead of the regular festive-season services.

The initiative is aimed at giving tourists additional opportunities to experience the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s historic locomotives, mountain landscapes and cultural heritage during one of eastern India’s biggest festive periods.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Darjeeling Toy Train, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and remains one of India’s most recognised heritage railway attractions.
