UPSC CSE Mains 2026 Begins Today
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has begun the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026 today, August 21, marking a crucial stage for candidates competing for positions in India’s civil services.
According to the official UPSC timetable, the written examination is being conducted over five examination days — August 21, 22, 23, 29 and 30.
Essay Paper Opens the Mains Examination
The examination begins today with Paper-I, the Essay paper, scheduled in the forenoon session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon.
The General Studies papers will follow on August 22 and 23, while the Indian Language and English papers are scheduled for August 29. The final two papers, covering the candidate’s optional subject, will be conducted on August 30.
Five-Day Schedule
The UPSC has divided the examination across two consecutive weekends.
| Date | Examination |
|---|---|
| August 21 | Essay |
| August 22 | General Studies I & II |
| August 23 | General Studies III & IV |
| August 29 | Indian Language & English |
| August 30 | Optional Subject Papers I & II |
Each examination day has sessions from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, except today when only the Essay paper is scheduled.
Admit Card and Exam-Day Rules
UPSC has issued detailed instructions for candidates appearing in the Mains examination.
Candidates are required to carry their printed e-Admit Card and the prescribed original photo identity document to the examination centre. Candidates have also been advised to follow the Commission’s instructions concerning entry, authentication and prohibited electronic devices.
The Mains admit cards were released earlier this month through the UPSC’s online system.
New Question Paper Representation System
A notable change this year is the introduction of the Question Paper Representation Portal (QPReP).
After the examination concludes, candidates will have an official mechanism to submit representations concerning questions in the Mains papers. UPSC has specified that representations sent through email, post or other methods will not be accepted.
According to the Commission’s latest information, question papers will be made available online after the examination, followed by the representation window.
A Critical Stage for Civil Services Aspirants
The Civil Services Mains examination is the second major stage of the UPSC recruitment process after the Preliminary Examination.
Candidates who qualify the written Mains stage will subsequently compete in the Personality Test/Interview, which forms the final stage of the selection process.
For thousands of aspirants, the five-day written examination represents the culmination of months of preparation involving answer-writing practice, current-affairs revision and subject-specific study.
Focus Shifts to Answer Writing and Time Management
Unlike the objective Preliminary Examination, the Mains requires candidates to produce structured written answers under strict time limits.
Essay writing, General Studies and optional-subject papers require candidates to demonstrate not only factual knowledge but also analysis, clarity, argumentation and effective presentation.
With multiple papers scheduled over two weekends, maintaining consistency throughout the examination will be crucial.
UPSC Mains 2026 Underway
With the Essay paper beginning today, the UPSC Civil Services Main Examination 2026 has officially entered its most demanding written stage.
Candidates will now face a packed schedule through August 30, with the final outcome determining who progresses toward the final interview stage of the country’s highly competitive civil services selection process.
