India Secure First World Cup Win

The Indian women’s hockey team produced a dominant performance on Tuesday, defeating South Africa 6-1 in their second Pool D match at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen.

The victory gave India their first win of the tournament after their opening 2-2 draw against China and significantly strengthened their position in the race for the next round.

India’s attacking display was spread across the team, with Sunelita Toppo, Navneet Kaur, Sushila Chanu, Deepika, Lalremsiami and Sakashi Rani all getting on the scoresheet.

South Africa managed only one goal, scored by Kayla de Waal in the fourth quarter.

The six-goal performance made the result particularly significant, giving India a major boost to their goal difference.

India Move to the Top of Pool D

The emphatic victory moved India to the top of Pool D, putting the team in a strong position ahead of their final group match.

India had begun their campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against China, the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallists. The result against South Africa therefore represented a major improvement in India’s attacking output.

The improved goal difference could prove important when the qualification positions are ultimately decided.

Strong Response After China Draw

India showed resilience in their opening match against China, recovering from periods of pressure to secure a point.

Against South Africa, however, the Indian side was considerably more clinical. Six different players contributed goals, demonstrating the team’s ability to create scoring opportunities from multiple areas of the attack.

The result also provides momentum heading into India’s decisive final Pool D fixture.

England Await in Final Pool Match

India’s next challenge will be England on Thursday, August 20.

According to the current qualification scenario, India are now in a strong position to advance. A draw against England would be enough to secure their place in the second round, while the outcome of the other Pool D match and goal difference could become important depending on results.

The England match will therefore determine India’s final position in the pool.

Biggest World Cup Win for India

The 6-1 victory was also historic from India’s perspective.

It has been reported as the Indian women’s team’s biggest-ever win at a Hockey World Cup, underlining the scale of the performance against South Africa.

With their attack firing and qualification hopes strengthened, India now have an important opportunity to continue their campaign against England.

India’s World Cup Campaign Gains Momentum

After a difficult opening draw, India’s six-goal performance has completely changed the complexion of their Pool D campaign.

The team will now turn its attention to England, knowing that another positive result could take them into the next phase of the tournament.

For Indian hockey fans, the 6-1 victory provides plenty of reason for optimism as the World Cup campaign enters its decisive stage.
