New Delhi, October 8, 2026: Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in the Indian T20I squad after nearly four years, and his comeback has put the spotlight on a remarkable fitness transformation built around years of strict discipline — including zero sugar, zero gluten and zero lactose.
The 36-year-old has been recalled for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series in New Zealand.
Back in India Colours After Four Years
Bhuvneshwar last played a T20I for India in November 2022, ironically in New Zealand.
His return to the squad comes after a prolonged period outside the national setup and a strong run of performances in domestic and franchise cricket.
Strict Diet Becomes Key Part of Transformation
According to his physiotherapist Ramneesh Vohra, Bhuvneshwar has followed a diet with no sugar, gluten or lactose for around six years.
The changes were part of a broader effort to reduce visceral fat, improve muscle mass and build a stronger body capable of handling fast-bowling workloads.
Body Fat Drops From Around 22–25% to 16%
Bhuvneshwar reportedly weighed around 80 kg with approximately 22–25% body fat earlier in his fitness journey.
He is now around 75 kg with roughly 16% body fat, while also improving his muscle mass.
Goal Was to Rediscover His Swing
Rather than simply trying to increase pace, Bhuvneshwar focused on regaining the swing that made him one of India’s most dangerous new-ball bowlers.
His training initially focused on restoring movement through the air before progressing to mobility, strength and match-simulation work.
IPL Performances Strengthen Comeback Case
Bhuvneshwar’s performances in IPL 2026 played an important role in bringing him back into the national conversation.
He took 28 wickets during the season, finishing just one behind Kagiso Rabada in the Purple Cap race, while showing that his ability to swing the new ball remained intact.
Fitness Work Adds New Dimension
His physio said Bhuvneshwar’s physical condition has improved significantly over the years, describing him as capable of handling endurance work far beyond what he could earlier.
The improvement has allowed him to maintain his bowling skills while building greater physical robustness.
New Zealand Marks Full-Circle Return
India’s upcoming New Zealand tour carries added significance for the veteran pacer.
New Zealand was where Bhuvneshwar played his previous international match in 2022, and it will now also be the destination for his return to the Indian team.
Comeback Puts 2027 World Cup Talk in Focus
Although Bhuvneshwar has currently been recalled to the T20I side, his return has also generated discussion around whether he could push his way back into ODI contention ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
For now, the New Zealand series will provide the clearest indication of how effectively his rebuilt body and rediscovered swing translate back to international cricket.
