India made a winning start to the three-match ODI series against England by registering a convincing six-wicket victory in the opening match at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Chasing a target of 259, the visitors reached 262/4 in 45.2 overs, taking a 1–0 lead in the series and bouncing back strongly after their disappointing T20I campaign.
England Recover After Dramatic Collapse
After winning the toss, England opted to bat first and looked comfortable at 61 without loss. However, India’s bowlers triggered a dramatic collapse as England slipped to 80/5, losing five wickets in quick succession.
Experienced batter Joe Root anchored the innings with an unbeaten 76, while Liam Dawson contributed 68. Their 121-run partnership rescued England from a difficult position and helped the hosts post a competitive 258 all out in 47.5 overs.
Axar Patel Leads India’s Bowling Attack
All-rounder Axar Patel delivered one of his finest ODI performances with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 62 runs. He received valuable support from Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar, who picked up two wickets each to prevent England from posting a bigger total.
India’s disciplined bowling during the middle overs proved to be the turning point of the match, restricting England despite Root and Dawson’s recovery partnership.
Shubman Gill Anchors the Chase
India’s chase began cautiously after early wickets, but captain Shubman Gill produced another composed innings at Edgbaston. Gill scored a fluent 80 off 75 balls, striking 11 fours and one six, before retiring hurt because of cramps.
His partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who added 35, steadied the innings and ensured India remained firmly in control throughout the chase.
Axar Patel and Washington Sundar Finish in Style
Following Gill’s retirement, Axar Patel once again made an impact with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 57, while Washington Sundar scored an unbeaten 52.
The duo shared an unbroken century partnership that guided India comfortably past the target with 28 balls to spare. Washington sealed the victory in style by hitting the winning six, completing an impressive all-round team performance.
India Ends England’s Long Edgbaston Record
The victory was particularly significant as it ended England’s long unbeaten run in men’s ODIs at Edgbaston, where they had remained unbeaten for over a decade. The result also gave India valuable momentum heading into the remaining two matches of the series.
Focus Shifts to the Second ODI
With the opening match won convincingly, India will now look to seal the series in the second ODI. England, meanwhile, will aim to address their middle-order collapse and improve their bowling performance as they seek to level the series.
India’s balanced display in both batting and bowling has strengthened confidence within the squad, and the visitors will enter the next match with momentum firmly on their side.
