New Delhi, July 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alert for several parts of the country, warning that active southwest monsoon conditions are likely to bring widespread rain over the next two days. States including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Telangana, and parts of central and western India are expected to experience intense rainfall on July 6 and 7.
The weather department has advised state governments and district administrations to remain on alert, as heavy rainfall may lead to waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and disruption to transport and essential services in vulnerable areas.
Active Southwest Monsoon Continues
According to the IMD, favourable monsoon conditions are expected to persist over central, western, and peninsular India. The weather system is likely to produce widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several regions.
Some locations may receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, particularly along the Western Ghats and parts of central India.
States Under Rainfall Alert
The IMD has highlighted Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Telangana, and adjoining areas among the regions likely to witness significant rainfall activity.
Coastal areas may also experience rough sea conditions, prompting advisories for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea during the warning period.
Authorities Asked to Stay Prepared
Disaster management authorities, local administrations, and emergency response teams have been advised to remain prepared for any weather-related incidents.
Officials have been instructed to closely monitor flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, ensure readiness of rescue teams, and maintain coordination among emergency services.
Public Advisory
The IMD has urged residents to follow official weather updates and exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged roads, and refrain from crossing flooded rivers or drains.
Motorists have been asked to drive carefully, while residents in vulnerable areas should remain alert to local evacuation advisories if required.
Positive Impact on Agriculture
Despite the risks associated with heavy rainfall, the active southwest monsoon is expected to benefit Kharif crop cultivation by improving soil moisture and supporting sowing activities across major agricultural regions.
The IMD said it will continue to monitor the evolving weather situation and issue regular forecasts and warnings to help authorities and the public take appropriate precautionary measures.
