CUPERTINO, September 1: Apple entered a new leadership era on Tuesday as John Ternus officially took over as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Tim Cook after his nearly 15-year tenure at the helm of the technology giant.
Tim Cook Moves to Executive Chairman Role
Cook has not left Apple. Effective September 1, he has moved into the position of Executive Chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors, where he will continue supporting selected areas of the company, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
Apple had announced the succession plan in April, saying the transition was unanimously approved by its Board of Directors following a long-term succession-planning process.
John Ternus Takes Charge After 25 Years at Apple
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and most recently served as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
During his career at Apple, he has played a major role in developing products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods, and was closely involved in the Mac’s transition to Apple silicon.
Apple’s updated leadership page now officially identifies Ternus as CEO and a member of the Board of Directors.
Cook Ends Nearly 15 Years as CEO
Tim Cook became Apple CEO in August 2011, succeeding company co-founder Steve Jobs.
During Cook’s leadership, Apple expanded its services and wearables businesses while growing from a company valued at roughly $350 billion to more than $4.5 trillion, according to Reuters.
Apple’s annual sales reached approximately $416 billion in 2025, with profits of around $112 billion.
AI and Supply Chain Among Ternus’ Biggest Challenges
Ternus takes charge at a crucial time for Apple as the company faces intense competition in artificial intelligence and seeks to reduce its manufacturing dependence on China.
Apple has already been expanding production in countries including India and Vietnam, while the new CEO will also face pressure to accelerate the company’s AI strategy.
First Major Apple Event Under Ternus Coming September 9
Ternus will have little time before his first major product event as CEO.
Apple has scheduled its next major launch event for September 9, when the company is expected to unveil its next-generation iPhone lineup. The event will be the first major Apple product presentation of the Ternus era.
The transition marks one of Apple’s biggest leadership changes since Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011, while Cook’s continued presence as Executive Chairman provides continuity as Ternus begins leading the company.
