Victoria, Seychelles, June 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced a $175 million economic assistance package for Seychelles to support key development projects, while virtually inaugurating the Seychelles–India Professional & Technical Centre during his state visit to the island nation.

The announcement came after bilateral talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation, sustainable development, and economic partnership between the two countries.

$175 Million Package to Boost Development

Prime Minister Modi announced that India will extend a $175 million package aimed at supporting infrastructure development, healthcare, education, renewable energy, digital connectivity, and capacity-building initiatives in Seychelles.

The assistance is expected to fund projects that enhance public services, improve connectivity, and strengthen the country’s long-term economic resilience.

Speaking during the joint event, Modi said India remains committed to supporting the development priorities of Seychelles as a trusted partner in the Indian Ocean region.

Professional & Technical Centre Inaugurated

The Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated the Seychelles–India Professional & Technical Centre, a modern skill development institution established with Indian assistance.

The centre will offer vocational and technical training in fields such as information technology, engineering, hospitality, renewable energy, and business management. It is expected to help young people develop industry-relevant skills and improve employment opportunities.

Officials from both countries described the project as an important milestone in educational cooperation and human resource development.

Focus on Blue Economy and Maritime Cooperation

During the bilateral discussions, India and Seychelles agreed to deepen cooperation in the Blue Economy, maritime security, climate resilience, fisheries, disaster management, and coastal infrastructure.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a free, open, and secure Indian Ocean while expanding collaboration in sustainable ocean resource management.

Several Agreements Signed

The two countries signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering healthcare, education, digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, cultural exchanges, and institutional cooperation.

The agreements are expected to strengthen bilateral ties and open new avenues for investment, technology transfer, and people-to-people exchanges.

India Reaffirms Commitment to Island Nations

Addressing officials and members of the Indian diaspora, Prime Minister Modi said India’s partnership with Seychelles reflects its broader commitment to MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), which promotes inclusive growth, maritime security, and sustainable development across the Indian Ocean.

He said India would continue working closely with Seychelles to address common challenges, including climate change, energy security, and economic development.

The visit marks another significant step in strengthening India–Seychelles relations, with both countries expressing confidence that the new initiatives will benefit future generations.
