Victoria, Seychelles, June 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred with Seychelles’ highest civilian honour, the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon”, in recognition of his contributions to environmental conservation, climate action, sustainable development, and the promotion of the Blue Economy.

The prestigious distinction was presented by Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie during a ceremonial event held in Victoria as part of Prime Minister Modi’s three-day state visit. The award is being conferred for the first time by Seychelles and recognises global leadership in environmental stewardship and support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

First Recipient of the Prestigious Honour

Prime Minister Modi became the first international leader to receive the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” title. The Seychelles government said the honour acknowledges his leadership in advancing climate resilience, sustainable management of ocean resources, and strengthening international cooperation on environmental issues.

Accepting the honour, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the award to all countries committed to protecting the environment and combating climate change.

He said the recognition belongs to every nation working collectively for a greener future and reaffirmed India’s commitment to sustainable development, renewable energy, and global climate initiatives.

India-Seychelles Sign Key Agreements

During the visit, India and Seychelles signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at expanding cooperation in maritime security, the Blue Economy, digital connectivity, healthcare, education, renewable energy, and capacity building.

The two leaders also discussed strengthening strategic cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region and enhancing economic partnerships between the two countries.

Strengthening the MAHASAGAR Vision

Addressing the Seychelles Parliament, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision, describing the Indian Ocean as a shared space for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

He reiterated India’s support for Small Island Developing States and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to working closely with Seychelles on regional security, climate resilience, and economic development.

A Milestone in Bilateral Relations

The honour marks another milestone in the growing India-Seychelles partnership, which this year also celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations. Officials from both countries described the visit as an opportunity to deepen cooperation across strategic, environmental, and cultural sectors.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties and reinforce India’s role as a key development partner in the Indian Ocean region.
