New Delhi, June 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts for more than 20 states and Union Territories as the southwest monsoon continues to advance across the country. The weather agency has warned of intense showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in several regions over the next few days.
The latest forecast indicates that widespread rainfall activity is likely across north, central, eastern, western, and northeastern India, with authorities advising residents to remain alert, particularly in flood-prone and landslide-sensitive areas.
States Under Heavy Rain Alert
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Several districts may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, increasing the possibility of localized disruptions.
Flooding and Landslide Risks Increase
The IMD has cautioned that continuous rainfall could lead to waterlogging in urban areas, flash floods in low-lying regions, and landslides in hilly states.
State disaster management authorities have been advised to remain on standby, while local administrations are closely monitoring river levels and vulnerable locations. Emergency response teams have also been deployed in areas considered at higher risk.
Advisory for Residents and Travellers
Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to follow official weather advisories. People living near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone slopes have been asked to remain vigilant and be prepared to move to safer locations if required.
Motorists travelling through mountainous regions have been advised to check road conditions before beginning their journeys, as heavy rain may result in road blockages and reduced visibility.
Monsoon Brings Relief and Challenges
While the advancing southwest monsoon is expected to benefit agriculture by improving soil moisture and supporting Kharif crop sowing, excessive rainfall in some areas could damage standing crops and affect farming operations.
Agricultural departments are monitoring weather conditions and advising farmers to take suitable measures to protect crops from prolonged rainfall and waterlogging.
Authorities Monitor Weather Developments
The IMD said it will continue to issue regular weather updates as the monsoon progresses across the country. Disaster management agencies, state governments, and civic authorities are coordinating preparedness measures to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall.
Citizens have been encouraged to stay informed through official IMD bulletins and local administration advisories while avoiding rumours circulating on social media.
