New Delhi, July 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather warnings for several states as the southwest monsoon entered an active phase, bringing forecasts of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across large parts of the country over the next few days.
According to the IMD’s latest All India Weather Bulletin, intense monsoon activity is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Konkan & Goa, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and several northeastern states.
Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain Forecast
The weather agency has forecast extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over parts of West Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat Region, Konkan & Goa, Saurashtra & Kutch, and Madhya Maharashtra, while several other states are likely to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
Alerts for Northern and Central India
Northern states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan, are expected to receive widespread rainfall in the coming days. Central India, particularly Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, is also likely to experience intense monsoon showers, with the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Advisory for Residents and Travellers
The IMD has advised residents in affected areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Local authorities have also been asked to monitor flood-prone regions, while commuters have been cautioned about possible traffic congestion, reduced visibility, and disruptions to road, rail, and air transport.
Fishermen Asked to Avoid the Sea
The weather department has issued a marine advisory asking fishermen not to venture into parts of the Arabian Sea because of rough sea conditions and strong winds associated with the active monsoon system.
Monsoon Activity Expected to Continue
Meteorologists expect active southwest monsoon conditions to persist over many parts of the country through the coming week, providing much-needed rainfall in several regions while also increasing the risk of localised flooding, landslides in hilly areas, and disruption to normal life. Citizens have been advised to follow official weather bulletins and instructions issued by local administrations.
