Iran Blames US for Strait of Hormuz Tensions, Calls for Regional Diplomacy

Tehran/Moscow, October 20, 2026: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has blamed the United States for continued instability around the Strait of Hormuz and called for a regional security arrangement led by countries in the region rather than foreign military powers.

Araqchi made the remarks during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, arguing that regional disputes should be addressed through diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation.

Iran Calls for Regional Security Framework

Araqchi said countries surrounding the Persian Gulf should take the lead in developing a security mechanism for the region.

He argued that security arrangements imposed or supported by outside military powers had contributed to instability instead of resolving regional tensions.

US Blamed for Hormuz Instability

The Iranian foreign minister directly accused Washington of contributing to insecurity in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The strategic waterway is one of the world’s most important routes for global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption can affect maritime trade, energy supplies and international markets.

Tehran Pushes Diplomacy Amid Continuing Tensions

Araqchi said Iran supports diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing regional tensions and restoring maritime security.

He also welcomed efforts to enable countries in the region to develop their own security arrangements without relying on foreign military forces.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Key Flashpoint

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have intensified amid reported attacks on commercial shipping, sanctions-related disputes and the continuing confrontation between Iran and the United States.

The situation has heightened concerns about shipping routes and the reliability of global energy supplies. Any prolonged disruption to maritime traffic through the Strait could have wider implications for oil markets and international trade.

Iran Continues to Push Proposal to Reopen Strait

Iran has also reiterated a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions, including changes to US sanctions and restrictions affecting Iranian oil exports.

However, negotiations remain complicated by broader disagreements between Tehran and Washington, including disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.

Moscow and Tehran Emphasise Diplomatic Approach

Iran’s latest comments came during talks with Russia, which has offered to play a diplomatic role in efforts to reduce tensions.

Tehran maintains that negotiations remain preferable to further escalation, which could threaten regional stability and disrupt energy supplies.

The statements underscore continuing differences between Iran and the United States over maritime security, sanctions and the role of foreign military forces in the Persian Gulf.
