Kalaburagi, October 19, 2026: A 19-year-old man from West Bengal has been detained in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi for questioning over suspected online links with people allegedly associated with Pakistan-based terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The suspect, identified in reports as Mumtaz-ul-Malik, was taken into custody following intelligence inputs and a joint operation involving central intelligence officials and local police. Investigators are examining his social media activity and digital communications to determine the nature and extent of the alleged links.
19-Year-Old Detained in Kalaburagi
Malik, a native of West Bengal, had reportedly been living in Kalaburagi and working at a jewellery establishment in the city’s Saraf Bazaar area along with his brother.
Police detained him late on Saturday after receiving intelligence suggesting possible communication with social media accounts allegedly linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Joint Operation by Intelligence Officials and Local Police
The detention followed a coordinated operation involving central intelligence officials and Karnataka Police.
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge said state authorities were treating the matter seriously and were coordinating with the central government as the investigation continues.
Investigators Examine Social Media Communications
Authorities are examining Malik’s alleged online interactions with individuals or accounts suspected of being associated with LeT.
According to preliminary reports, investigators are looking into whether sensitive information was shared through online messages.
Police have not publicly disclosed the complete contents of the communications, and the extent of any alleged association remains under investigation.
Digital Devices Under Investigation
Investigators are also examining mobile phones and other digital material linked to the suspect.
Reports indicate that authorities are attempting to recover and analyse communications to determine who Malik had been interacting with and whether any information of security significance was exchanged.
Police Yet to Establish Full Nature of Alleged Links
Authorities have so far remained cautious about describing the extent of Malik’s alleged involvement.
Kalaburagi Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa said the youth had been taken in for questioning. Hindustan Times reported that, at the time of its report, no formal complaint had yet been registered against him.
Other reports subsequently stated that a case had been registered at Brahmapur Police Station, indicating that the legal status of the investigation was developing.
One Other Person Released After Questioning
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge said two individuals had initially been taken into custody based on intelligence inputs.
According to him, one person was later released after investigators found no links to militant organisations, while the inquiry involving Malik continued.
Karnataka Plans Employee Verification SOP
The case has also prompted the Karnataka government to consider stronger employee-verification procedures for businesses.
Kharge said the state plans to formulate a standard operating procedure for background verification, particularly as workers from different states are employed in jewellery establishments, e-commerce operations, homestays and other businesses.
Authorities Stress Right to Employment
At the same time, the Karnataka government has stressed that people from other states have the right to work in Karnataka.
Kharge said the proposed verification measures are intended to strengthen security and record-keeping rather than prevent people from travelling to the state for employment.
Similar Cases Under Investigation in Karnataka
The Kalaburagi inquiry comes amid heightened scrutiny of suspected online contact between individuals in Karnataka and Pakistan-based extremist networks.
Earlier cases in Bidar, Davanagere and Chikkaballapura have also involved investigations into social-media or messaging-platform communications allegedly linked to extremist organisations or foreign handlers.
Authorities have emphasised that these cases involve different allegations and are at different stages of investigation.
Probe Continues Into Alleged LeT Contacts
Investigators are now attempting to establish whether the alleged communications involved only online contact or extended to recruitment, information-sharing or other unlawful activity.
Further action will depend on the findings of the digital investigation and questioning by security agencies.
Authorities have not yet publicly established that Malik carried out any operational activity on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba, and the allegations remain subject to investigation.
