HARDOI, September 29: A 37-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district was allegedly held captive, partially tonsured and forced to wear a garland made of shoes following a personal dispute in Hardoi district. Police have registered a case and launched searches for the accused after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.
The incident allegedly occurred on September 27 in Gangpur village, and came to wider attention after footage showed the man crying and pleading while people around him recorded the scene.
Viral Video Brings Incident to Light
A video circulating online reportedly shows the man with part of his head shaved and a garland of shoes around his neck.
The footage prompted police to examine the incident and contact those involved.

Man Says Relationship Began on Instagram
The complainant, identified as Narendra, told police that he had met a woman through Instagram around two-and-a-half years ago.
He claimed that the two later met in Kannauj and married at a temple before living together for a period of time.

Narendra alleged that a disagreement developed when he travelled to meet the woman earlier this month.

The complainant alleged that he was later taken to a village in Hardoi, where the situation escalated.

Narendra alleged that the accused shaved half of his head and part of his moustache using scissors and a razor.
He further alleged that he was made to wear a garland constructed from shoes as part of the public humiliation.

Police said preliminary information indicates that the man and woman knew each other and that a dispute had developed between them.
