Amidst US President Trump’s constant threats of high tariffs, the European Union and India reached an agreement that efforts will be made to seal the bilateral free trade (India-EU Free Trade) agreement by the end of this year. During a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, PM Modi said that “both countries have instructed their officials regarding this.” At the same time, Ursula Der also said in a think tank event that “both sides are considering finalizing it. This will be the largest agreement of its kind in the world.” Meanwhile, after the bilateral talks between the two sides and the representative level, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs Tanmay Lal said in a press conference that “bilateral talks are being held with a very serious attitude, the political message from both the leaders is clear that this agreement is important and it is necessary to implement it as soon as possible. Let us tell you that along with President Ursula, commissioners from 22 out of 27 countries of the European Union (EU) have come to India on a visit. The big thing is that for the first time such a large delegation of the EU has come to visit another country. It is worth noting that after Ursula took over the reins of the European Commission again, for the first time she has gone on a foreign tour with her team.

Addressing a think tank on the second day of her visit (India-EU Free Trade) in Delhi, Ursula clearly said about this partnership that “To deal with the geo-political challenges, both sides will have to take the strategic relations to the next level There will be a bilateral security partnership with India and the European Union is exploring the possibilities of future security partnership with India like the agreements made with Japan and South Korea.” According to the information received, several meetings were held between EU representatives and Indian government ministers during this visit, in which a blueprint for cooperation in trade, investment, green growth, technology, security and skilling has been prepared. During this, Lal said that three working groups under the Trade and Technology Council also achieved significant success. Progress has been made in sectors like green energy, digital governance, and strategic technology.

Apart from this, India-EU has also agreed to take concrete steps for the India-West Asia-Europe economic corridor. Both sides have also come closer in the field of defense and security. Along with this, both will also work on triangular development projects for sustainable development in Indo Pacific and Africa. Not only this, emphasis has been laid on semiconductor ecosystem, high performance computing, 6G, DPI. Under this, cooperation in electric vehicles, green/renewable hydrogen has been taken forward. Moving forward in this direction, an agreement on the semiconductor ecosystem has been given the green signal. Meanwhile, an agreement was also signed between India 6G Alliance and EU 6G Smart Network.

Both sides emphasized on deepening cooperation against counter terrorism and terrorism financing.

Apart from this, both sides (India-EU Free Trade) expressed satisfaction over the joint exercise between Indian Navy and EU Maritime Security Entities. The EU welcomed India’s interest in joining PESCO (Permanent Structured Co-operation Project). Both sides emphasized on further deepening cooperation against counter terrorism and terrorist financing. Apart from this, there was talk on strengthening long-term visa schemes and mobility and migration mechanisms. Both sides not only reiterated their commitment to support a free and open Indo Pacific but also decided to organize a Green Hydrogen Forum and an Offshore Wind Energy Summit. While on the one hand both sides advocated for permanent peace in Ukraine, on the other hand they also reiterated the shared vision of a two-state solution on the issue of Israel and Palestine.
