Australia’s Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket After 14-Year Career

Melbourne, November 3, 2026: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to one of the most explosive and unconventional careers in modern white-ball cricket. The 38-year-old confirmed that he is also stepping away from Victoria’s domestic 50-over and four-day competitions.

Maxwell Ends Australia Career Across All Formats

Maxwell finishes his international career having played 149 ODIs, 130 T20 internationals and seven Test matches for Australia.

He had already retired from ODI cricket in 2025, and his latest announcement formally ends his T20I and international career.

Three-Time World Cup Winner

Maxwell was part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup-winning teams and also helped the country win the 2021 T20 World Cup.

His ability to change matches quickly with the bat, contribute with off-spin and produce spectacular fielding moments made him one of Australia’s most valuable limited-overs players.

Nearly 4,000 ODI Runs

Maxwell scored 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 runs in T20 internationals.

He also took 128 wickets across the two shorter international formats, underlining his importance as a genuine all-rounder.

Five T20I Centuries

Maxwell finishes as one of only two players, alongside India’s Rohit Sharma, to have scored five centuries in T20 internationals.

His aggressive 360-degree strokeplay and ability to improvise against both pace and spin earned him the nickname “The Big Show.”

Last International Came at T20 World Cup

Maxwell’s final appearance for Australia came against Oman at the 2026 T20 World Cup in February.

Australia subsequently began introducing younger players into its T20 setup, and Maxwell said discussions with team management remained open before he eventually decided to retire.

Hoped for MCG Farewell

Maxwell revealed that there had been some hope of receiving a farewell international at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against England.

However, Australia’s selectors opted to continue with younger players, and Maxwell said he understood the direction the team was taking.

Fitness a Major Factor in Decision

Maxwell said he now wants to spend more time managing his body and ensuring he can continue playing in the remaining tournaments of his professional career.

He has dealt with knee issues and said preserving his fitness became increasingly important at this stage of his career.

Big Bash Career Will Continue

Although he has retired from international cricket and Victoria’s domestic one-day and red-ball competitions, Maxwell will continue playing franchise cricket.

He remains contracted with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League through the 2027-28 season.

One of Australia’s Most Entertaining Cricketers

Maxwell leaves international cricket as one of Australia’s most distinctive white-ball players, remembered for fearless batting, unconventional shot-making and his ability to influence matches in multiple disciplines.

His retirement closes a major chapter in Australian cricket after more than a decade at the international level.
