Astana, October 29, 2026: Eighteen-year-old Indian wrestler Kajal Dhochak has emerged as one of the biggest stories of the 2026 World Wrestling Championships after winning silver in the women’s 76kg category on her senior Worlds debut.
Kajal lost a close 6–8 final to Ukraine’s Anastasiya Alpyeyeva, but still created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a World Championships medal in the heavyweight category.
Historic Medal for India
Kajal is also the youngest Indian wrestler to win a medal at the World Championships.
Her silver marks a breakthrough in a weight category where India has traditionally had limited international success.
Final Went Down to Last 30 Seconds
The title bout was tied 4–4 with around 30 seconds remaining.
Alpyeyeva then scored a decisive four-point move before Kajal responded with another takedown, but time ran out with the Ukrainian ahead 8–6.
Strong Comeback in Semifinal
Kajal’s run to the final included a dramatic semifinal victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy.
Trailing 1–7, the Indian fought back to win 10–7 and secure her place in the gold-medal bout.
Already a Two-Time U20 World Champion
Despite being only 18, Kajal entered the senior Worlds with a strong junior record.
She won the U20 world title in 72kg in 2025 and followed it with another gold in the 76kg category in 2026.
Heavyweight Wrestling Gets Major Boost
Kajal’s medal is particularly significant because India has rarely produced women wrestlers capable of challenging at the highest level in the heaviest Olympic weight category.
Her success could encourage greater investment and competition in the 76kg division.
Neelam Sirohi Also Wins Silver
India celebrated another historic result as Neelam Sirohi won silver in the women’s 50kg category.
It was the first time two Indian women reached the finals at the same edition of the senior World Wrestling Championships.
Silver Signals Bigger Potential
Kajal’s performance has put her firmly among India’s brightest wrestling prospects.
At just 18, coaches believe improvements in strength, defence and experience could make her a major medal contender in future World Championships and Olympic competitions.
Breakthrough Moment for Indian Wrestling
Kajal may have missed gold by a narrow margin, but her silver has already created history.
Her rise from junior world champion to senior Worlds medallist suggests that Indian women’s heavyweight wrestling may finally have a genuine international contender.
