GitHub Launches Copilot Fusion, Claims Frontier-Level AI Coding at About Half the Cost

San Francisco, October 29, 2026: GitHub has launched Copilot Fusion, a new multi-model AI coding system designed to automatically select and coordinate different AI models depending on the complexity of a developer’s task.

GitHub says the system can deliver near-frontier coding performance while reducing the cost and time required for AI-assisted software development.

Copilot Fusion Is Not a Single AI Model

Unlike traditional coding assistants where developers manually choose a model, Copilot Fusion decides which model or combination of models should handle each task.

It can either use one model directly or coordinate multiple models when extra reasoning or verification is required.

Three Effort Levels Available

Developers can choose between:

  • Fusion Standard for everyday coding
  • Fusion High for more difficult tasks
  • Fusion Max for complex reasoning and demanding coding work

Fusion then handles the model selection automatically.

GitHub Claims Near-Frontier Performance

GitHub says Fusion Max scored 60 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index.

That placed it within two points of Claude Code running Opus 5.5 Max in the benchmark comparison cited by the company.

About Half the API Cost per Task

The company says Fusion Max achieved that performance at roughly half the average API cost per task.

It also reportedly used around half as many tokens and completed tasks approximately 40% faster.

Multiple AI Workflows Supported

Copilot Fusion can choose among three main execution methods:

Single: One model handles the task.

Cascade: A lower-cost model attempts the task first, with a stronger model used if quality checks fail.

Critique: One model produces an answer while another reviews it before a revision is generated.

Available Across Major Developer Tools

Copilot Fusion is available across GitHub Copilot environments including:

  • Visual Studio Code
  • GitHub Copilot app
  • GitHub Copilot CLI
  • JetBrains IDEs

Support for additional clients is expected later.

Enterprises Can Control Which Models Are Used

GitHub says enterprise administrators can decide which AI models Fusion is allowed to access.

This gives companies greater control over security, model policies and AI spending.

Temporary Discount Offered

Paid Copilot users are receiving a 30% discount on model costs through November 30, 2026 when using Copilot Fusion.

There is no separate Fusion fee; users are billed according to the models the system selects.

GitHub Targets Rising AI Costs

The launch comes as businesses increasingly worry about the cost of running AI coding agents at scale.

GitHub is positioning Fusion as a way to use expensive frontier models only when necessary, while relying on cheaper models for simpler tasks.

Multi-Model Coding Becomes New Focus

Copilot Fusion reflects a broader shift in AI development from choosing a single “best” model toward automatically combining specialised models.

GitHub’s strategy is to let developers focus on the coding task while the platform handles model selection, cost and orchestration in the background.
